I know some have already "gotten ready". I'll be on that soon, too. As you know, LAST year's convention was exceptional, truly worth every cent. One question, for now: will there be anyone else needing to split/share a room? If so..
I'm sure Spokane will be great.
So, let's all get our new belts, bags, attachments, gloves, etc, ready................

I am planning on coming, not sure about Shaylee and the baby. She wants too but we shall see.

If I had more vacation time I would drive it in a heartbeat. I LOVE that drive. It's only like 30 hours lol

How about another convention here on the east coast closer to NY and hopefully not on Fathers Day weekend, there are some Dad's that would love to attend a convention without missing time with their kids.

VCCC convention

kloveland's profile picture

I am really looking forward to this year’s convention it’s going to be a blast! One of the wonderful things about the VCCC is that members are encouraged to bring their own vacuums. I enjoy hearing the stories behind our member’s vacuums. This gives our members the opportunity to show off their restorations and enter our non-cleaning contests. Personally, I would rather bring my own vacuum from my collection and set it on display or use it in one of our cleaning contests. It’s more personable for me.

The VCCC is also able to travel every year to a different part of the US. For example this year we will be in Spokane Washington to see one of our long time member’s collection and vacuum shop. I feel that we support our members by traveling to where they are located. Which changes every year! The VCCC has membership dues and a convention fee in order to put on an organized convention. Without dues and a convention fee we could not do so. I have personally been to at least five VCCC conventions starting in 2010 and every year I've had an excellent time. I look forward going to the VCCC convention every year and seeing my vacuum collecting family.

I hope to see everyone in Spokane this year!

We've gotten to see a lot of the U.S. by attending these conventions. Everyone who goes admits that they're worth every penny.Well, they keep coming back!
We reunite w/ old friends, and create new friendships. no bashing of brands, people, events, It's very civilized. It's a lot of fun, sharing, etc. Hopefully, it will remain drama-free.
Get packing, everyone!

Looking forward to the fun and friendship

Gentlemen,
Brett and I will be visiting Marc's home and shop next week in Spokane to offer what assistance we can in preparation for next month's convention. Can you believe it's just a few weeks away?

Eastern Washington is a beautiful part of the US. Besides the grandeur of the state and the Cascades, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alberta are close by. I've traveled to that area since I was a child as my dad's family is just a couple hours south of Spokane. In fact I'll be visiting my father in Idaho just prior to the convention for Father's Day.
Best Wishes,
Sean

It's great that you're both going to be there. I just printed my form, etc this week. And, I got a roommie!
Kenny is absolutely correct.
Just think: EVERY year, we travel to a different part of the country. We see wonderful sights, are welcomed into so many member's homes, see their personal collections, etc.
For instance, since I joined The VCCC in 2008, we've been to the "Home of Hoover Appliances", N. canton, Ohio. We've been to Kirby, Filter Queen, etc.. Yes, even "I" set foot in those places. We've been to Chicago twice, Autstin, Texas, Portland, Minneapolis, St. Louis.... had a great time at The Fox Theatre. Last year was fantastic, too. We visited BMX Gary's place as well as countless vacuum shops. WE even were wonderfully welcomed at Stark's museum a few years back, as well as Jon Dufore's home, Jeff Parker's place, Phillip's and Shaylee's, Robert Seger's Barb's and Scott's , Dave Olsen's, Kenny's, etc. W even met the great Ruth Hollander. We were at Houston's and his partners home. People were laughing, eating, enjoying the
pool, etc. Because of the number of attendees, there's no possible way to not host these events at a hotel. Cleaning contests, raffles, games, dinners, etc. THAT's why there is a fee involved. It's proven time and time again to be worth every cent.
Even in spite of adverse comments, (some of us have even been referred to as "queens", isn't THAT ridiculous?.. we persevere, actually thrive.
Look up old posts about The VCCC's conventions. You'll relive past good times as well as become enlightened by what we do, who we are, etc.

other great house visits. We were graciously treated at Tania's home,Brett's and his partner's, Duane's,Alex Braun's, Ken Wagman's,John Pease's, and, not to mention, the 'original Tarantula Arms".
Fun times, indeed.

Is it just me, or....

...Has anyone noticed that one individual seems to be caught in the endless loop of a 1970's  8-Track, recanting the nauseating, misleading rhetoric of of a so-called 'convention' wannabe in Missouri that touts a no-membership, no registration-fee admission?  Of course there is no fee for a small group of people to hang out for an unscripted gathering at a generous factory where no events, no gathering halls displaying personal collections, and no included banquet/dinner is included.  Does anyone truly find that comparable to stopping by the local Arby's or Waffle House enroute to self-host a sumptuous bag-lunch and call that a 'convention'?

As mentioned by others, the VCCC provides opportunities to see numerous parts of the country visiting various personal collections, gather in a common hotel for multiple days of discussion and learning, and hang with like-minded people from all over the US,  even attracting collectors from other countries. All this continually makes for a true convention remembered and recounted during the year until its successor convention launches.

The VCCC clearly owes a debt of gratitude to early, founding members, many of which in good standing continue to attend and support their legacy, and we continue to appreciate you!

I realize this is ancient history, but when the VCCC convened here in Los Angeles in 2005 I hosted an al-fresco luncheon, a presentation of the first 50 years of Electrolux, a look-see into my workshop, and a demonstration of machine-polishing aluminum-body vacuum cleaners.

Right, I wasn't feeling left out; just reminiscing on past conventions. The one in Los Angeles was really great with lots of stuff to see and do. There was quite a turnout for it.

The lights are vintage stage lights with the original fixtures replaced with incandescent* bulbs 40-100 watts, mostly for "look."

(This was before the ban on incandescent bulbs.)

2005 Convention and Venues

The Los Angeles Convention was indeed another memorable one for the books!   Charles' was one of two very large collections that were generously shared, and his detailed, in depth display literally did document "50 Years of American Electrolux".  Kyle's very large display was more eclectic but similarly fascinating to see.  The Hotel, vacuum/conference room, and Banquet were amazing and very well coordinated.  I suppose it is true that you always remember your first time fondlylaughing, and that was my entree into the incredible VCCC whose legacy continues, even to the point of attempted replication.  (They say 'imitation' is the highest form of flattery'; apparently, that is still being proved valid.)

Indeed.

The VCCC is constantly changing, and should. However, some of it (the roots) still remain the same.
It was Charlie Watrous who really 'glammed it up'... and,for that, we are grateful.
I look back at photos from past conventions in amazement. Everyone should take a trip 'down Memory Lane'. Of course, there ARE minutes from ALL of the meetings. An amazing story is unveiled every time they are read. It explains a lot.
So, there' still time.
Unfortunately, this time, due to flying, I won't be able to bring any machines. But, they'll be plenty to look at.

I've just heard that some members are

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
re-joining The VCCC after a lapse in time. They were here before I joined. Old members, not an old VCCC. there is was/is really only one. For a minute, I thought it had disbanded at one time and a whole new club was born. But, that was false info. Also, sadly, some famous member will not be attending this year, due to schedule conflicts. :(
I'm not sure if he'll be attending the convention, but, at least 1 "old" member is returning. What a SURPRISE to hear this.
There might also be 2 or 3 "new" members soon as well.

Yes, Kids, some surprises all around.
Stay tuned..........................................................

Productive trip to Spokane

Dear VCCC members,
Brett and I had a productive visit to Spokane last week visiting Marc Turbyfill and spending time with him at his shop and home. Brett and I helped Marc organize what he is planning to offer to VCCC members during the convention. The sheer volume of what is available eclipses what I've seen in any VCCC Convention I've been to before. There are approximately 60 vacuums looking for new homes, over 100 hoses, and a deep parts and accessory inventory that Marc has maintained for his customers over the years. While Marc has had his shop in Spokane for over 20 years, when he bought it the purchase included parts inventory that was even considered vintage then! Everything from Apex to Wizard, and so much in between. Are you looking for parts for a vintage or contemporary vacuum...attachments...or new to you vacuums...don't miss out.
Best Wishes,
Sean
P.S. Hi 'CountryFord'...I'm looking forward to meeting you and your husband and talking Stratoliners and Mobile Maids. I've enjoyed reading your contributions to AutomaticWasher.org for quite a while.

Visit to Stark's Museum

Stark's Museum was yet another great opportunity enjoyed by the VCCC as we visit varying cities and collections, and the overwhelming response was a good time was definitely had by all.  That incredible Banquet, which of course is the grand finale of meals included in the Registration Fee was quite the treat.  By necessity, however, the Banquet does include less choices than an individual's self-hosting at the local White Castle or Wendy's.

Of Note: The VCCC Registration Fee does not include or provide any mind-altering options, either.

Infamously, it does.

sleepdoc's profile picture
He goes by "Power" followed by some numbers on ebay and snipes things from other collectors, something that I think is ungenerous where fellow collectors are involved. Some people might be around who actually know him and can describe him more broadly, perhaps more approvingly if it's justified, so I'll leave it at that.

All of the various stories floating around are 'before my time'. I DID hear that he may have deep pockets. If one likes, and can afford machines, well................... But, sadly, I've heard "vile" things............
He may not even know who I am, either. A lot of people do...or "think" they do. Some meet me and are rather surprised.
Who knows?

Just wondering what Mike Pupek has to do with this thread.

That having been said, we've been good friends for many years. I met him in 1991 via Stan Kann, who had been a friend of Mike's for a number of years previously. Mike was one of the original members of the VCCC -- he joined the club in the mid 1980s.

I have never known Mike to be anything but kind and gentle, with nothing bad to say about anyone. So it seems somewhat unseemly that his reputation is being unfairly besmirched here, without any substantiation whatsoever other than idle prattle and unfounded gossip.

(And I suspect that other Club old-timers would have the same to say about him. Too bad most of them are no longer around for one reason or another.)

Yes, Mike is a "man of means" and can afford to purchase whatever he wants. When did that ever become a crime? With all the small-minded and selfish childish users on eBay who purposely and maliciously drive up the price on things they want but can't afford -- just to be mean -- who can fault anyone for sniping?

I used to feel differently about sniping and frequently railed loudly and publicly against snipers. But over the years I have had a change of heart about this, especially when things I was bidding on were purposely being driven up in cost. The best way to prevent that from happening (and even then, it's not infallible) is to place a bid during the last four or five seconds of an auction's open period. There are even software programs to automatically snipe.

So, again: What does Mike Pupek have to do with this thread?

Obviously, it's not a crime, just not a kindness.

sleepdoc's profile picture
I don't buy many things on ebay anymore, so I don't know what the current climate is like amongst vacuum collectors on ebay. Let me be clear that I realize there's nothing illegal or criminal about sniping. However, I've always considered it an unfriendly thing to do when fellow collectors are involved. If a person were to do it over an over, to the point that people knew him by ebay moniker and by actual identity just for doing that so often, the penalty would be an ungenerous reputation, which is exactly what happened. I'm commenting within a very limited scope and not making any statements about what he was like outside of ebay; I would defer to those who actually knew him or continue to know him if he's still alive.

Mike, Sniping, and unfounded gossip

I, too, do not understand the harsh comments about Mike and so  I  unreservedly have to agree with Charles' comments/perspective.  Most everyone has their 'theory' about how to 'win' on E-bay;  mine initially focusing on exactly when to bid.  However, I find many who are disgruntled simply/merely because an individual wins many bids seem to be showing their jealousy.  In many cases, I have lost items to people who have apparently worked harder and smarter than I, and I applaud them for that rather than begrudge them.  I'm proud of my collection but recognize others may always outbid me as was the case recently on a much-sought-after phone I 'lost'.  I have never heard anything unkind said about Mike though I have definitely lost items to him.  At least they are going to someone who appreciates them as much as I would!!  Just my thoughts.

As well as nasty ones.....but....nasty things have been said about me as well. If one has the funds, and is quick, one is able to purchase various machines.
I only mentioned Mike because I've learned thathe has rejoined The VCCC. I'm sure Ken, our membershp coordinator, will welcome him publically, again.
Certainly, I was not throwing gasoline on a fire. That was certainly not my intention at all.

My 'I's are dotted and my 'T's are crossed

Gentlemen,
I just confirmed my rental car, convention hotel room, air travel and convention fee. Just in the nick of time, as most of the convention hotel rooms have been booked, what a good sign. While I requested from Avis an AMC Ambassador or Oldsmobile 98, neither where available but I reserved a full sized domestic vehicle so I'll have room for other conventioneers and their finds from Marc's shop and home. Be sure to pack sunscreen and parasols to protect from the summer sun, in case someone wants to take a stroll or enjoy the convenient walk between Marc's shop and home.
Only 3 1/2 weeks to go!
Sean

You are 100% correct, why would anyone want to join when people treat each other this way. I also agree with electrolux137, jealousy has ruined this club and the fellowship it once had.

I know the world keeps on spinning and things change and I will always remain a member but currently not at the same level for many of the same reasons.

I have hadHarsh opimions in the past,

And have said things I shouldn't, that being said, I have been friends with Tom Gasko, and the late Clay Floyd ever since I found out about the VCCC in 1994, Yes I was around that long ago, I am also friends with many of the newer members, I just refuse to get into a name calling put down match, The main reason I left the VCCC was the newsletter was done away with, weather it is being printed now I don't know,I know this, im 52 years old , I will not degrade myself by trying to insult others, say what you want, but Tom got us the first publicity we ever had, I have tried to make peace with those I had differences with, some here might find you would like Tom if you got to know him, As far as Mike Pupec , he has been to my home, eaten my cooking, and though I haven't seen him in a while, I get along fine with him ..

Getting Closer!!!

The VCCC, the longest-running and most varied Vacuum Club and Convention in the US  is just around the proverbial corner.  Still time to make your arrangements to be a part of it and you won't be sorry!    "Coming to a neighborhood near you', we're the only Convention that 'makes appearances' nearly all around the US, giving access to as many enthusiasts of vacuum cleaners as possible.   Hopefully, Spokane is a location you can attend.  If not, at least there is the knowledge of it not being in the same old, tired location year after year, ad nauseum.   Join us in Spokane, or when we come to your neck of the woods.  You won't leave disappointed, but you will most likely leave with numerous treasures as nearly all of our attendees cant attest to.

See you there!

The members of the VCCC welcome you

Looking forward to the same...

Fellow Club Members,
I'm looking forward to no drama, fun and seeing old friends too! All in Spokane in less than three weeks. I'm making my parts and vac lists for friends who can't make the trip. Will I be checking my lists twice, you better believe it.

This will be my tenth consecutive VCCC Convention and each one I find enriches my life in the present and provides great memories. From the warmth and kindness of Terry Latz, who greeted me like an old friend when we first met in Chicago in 2009, to the deep friendships that I have been lucky to develop with other VCCC members over the years...I consider myself lucky to be associated with the VCCC. Each year provides an opportunity to experience a new collection, or two, or three and enjoy the hospitality of a collector who has opened his or her home to the VCCC members. And the digging/finding/shopping...I remember climbing a ladder at an old time hardware store in Milwaukee handing vintage vac bags to Scott and Will and more recently helping John and Brett 'climb through' a long time closed vac store in Oklahoma City. Each year reveals a new adventure and I'm looking forward to the next one.
See everyone soon,
Sean

Had my oral surgery today.  Went well.  Go back for a check on Friday.

Then, heading up to camp in NY, just about 80 miles south east of Buffalo.

Alone this year so I made reservations on the Amtrak AutoTrain on June 11.  It takes me, and my car, from Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA.  I'll  drive from there to camp, arriving June 12 or 13.   I HATE driving, especially alone.
Will fly from Buffalo to Spokane on June 20.  Who else arrives Wednesday?

So looking forward to familiar and new faces as I have not been able to attend the last two conventions for various reasons.

Can't wait for my June adventures!

See you on the 20th!

And, yes, Hans, one day. it would be great to meet you in person. I'm very loyal to The VCCC. I don't bash, etc...although I've been ridiculed numerous times. However, I will not give some folks that power, the real power to hurt me or the people/friends whom I hold dear to me. Sadly, some friendships have ended, or diminished as well. That's unfortunate.

This summer I have a few summer classes I am taking, and even skipping a couple days for the convention wouldn't be a good idea. I'm really hoping I can make it to the next one but with my senior year coming up I'm just not sure.

Convention in Los Angeles

Indeed, the Convention was in Los Angeles in 2005 and it was awesome with two very large and varied collections exhibited.  Though each collection was quite varied, one collection displayed an essentially complete array of Electrolux documenting its first half-century in the U.S. (1924-1974).

Dear Convention Attendees
Brett and I will be welcoming guests beginning at 4pm at the convention hotel, be sure look for the signs to direct you. There will be a welcome brochure/map, as well as 'what to do and who to see' information available.

Be sure to bring an empty suitcase, duffle bag, or steamer trunk to bring home all the great machines and parts that are looking for new 'forever' homes. I brought two empty suitcases and am planning a trip to FedEx or two to help facilitate the movement of such items.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in the next day or two,
Sean

iT'S BEEN GOING GREAT!

After a horrible trip. long story, lost my luggage. It went to Newark, I didn't .Suitcase finally arrivewd here.
We went to an "AUTHORIZE3D HYOOVER DEALER", a Kirby Center, of course, Harold's (Marc's store). We're finding wonderful things. Several trips to UPD/FED EX....
The area is beautiful. We held a few elcetions, had our meeting, dinners at some really nice locations, cleaning contests, etc. It's a shame that some other members are missing here this year.
Tonight, dinner (private area) at a casino. Then, back to the hotel for awards, etc.....
This all goes by so quickly. Dave Olsen is here!!! What a surprise. We also have a new member here. We'll give more details later.
Just doing a quick 'check in' here.
As always, a great time is being had by all.
John

Major Kudos to our host in Spokane!

WOW!   Another incredible Convention!  So many thanks to our host, Marc, the Board, and numerous members who stepped up to provide such a fun, vibrant convention.  It seems each succeeding VCCC Convention continues to approach or meet the rather high bar established in 2008, each in its own unique way.  (note: 'high' not being referenced as in the much-lauded,  glorified, 'self-host' vacuum socials)   The thrill, camaraderie, and enjoyment never diminishes and in reality has clearly been on a noticeable upward trend for some years now.

While it's understood that some locations are more accessible than others, the Club's continuing effort to visit new, exciting areas, collections, and vacuum cleaner museums around the United States has allowed for increasingly greater numbers to be represented over time as "the Convention comes to a theater near you!" (the intent of a collaborative Board seeking new and exciting venues )

Special appreciation goes to original, founding member, John Lucia, for his continuing input, guidance, and humor in Spokane.  John, you are such a gentleman!

Again, many, many thanks to Marc and the VCCC Board.

RB

OMG a Regina canister in post 113!!!! I have never seen one with a hose with a brade on it or this paticular color! I wonder if it was a Canadian model. These are very rare canisters......Been looking for one for years!!!!

We had lots!!!

kloveland's profile picture
And I mean lots for sale this year! I shipped four boxes home. Probably the most I've ever seen at a convention. I'm working on posting pictures to the club's website.

We also had a very productive membership meeting. My plan is to scan most of the past newsletters (mid 90's through today) and provide them to our members on our site. So many valuable resources in those old newsletters! I'll be working with Dave Olsen's husband Pete to create a forum for our members on our site.

Ditto Rick B.! I had a wonderful time, always good to be with old friends and meet new members! My thanks to everyone who had a hand in putting it together and a special thanks to Marc for his generosity and opening his home to us!

I had a wonderful time. It was great to see old friends and make some new ones. Marc sure has a lot of stuff. We helped him "lighten" it up a little. Thanks to everyone who made this convention such a great experience. Spokane is a beautiful city. I'll be back in the Fall to pick up some purchases from Marc and visit with him.

Thank you, Kenny.  What a GREAT array, documenting so much of the Convention.  Yes, as John L stated, "A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!!!"   I surely second that!

That all white JC Penney
cleaned up perfectly. I have the vault. You can hardly tell the difference
My package arrived quickly, and unharmed too.
I got a mint 1070, brand new tools (ultraflex hose, separate connector, and a case of J bags.

Wow Kenny is right! The machines are all beautiful! That Regina cansiter is very rare. I believe it may have been one of the original judgeing by the pinstipe hose. All of the hoses I have seen are solid. No pinstripes.

Is the hose still air tight?

Congratulations Kenny!
