For the heck of it resubscribed to Consumer Reports-the first issue I received has their vacuum cleaner reviews. They test robot vacuums in this one. They still feel regular machines are still better-agree.They really liked the Samsung Powerbot vacuum-for its price--you could get a Kirby-so what if you have to push it yourself. For uprights the Kirby Avalir was in the middle-they really like the Kenmore vacuums.I WOULD NOT buy one of those because of the shaky ground Sears is on-When Sears shuts down--who will honor the Kenmore warranties? In this review they did not try canisters bagged or bagless. For bagless uprights CU liked Dyson Ball Animal2 and MultiFloor2.This is the Jan 2018 issue. They even show the article writers name-something they didn't do before.

@tolivac could you scan copies and post them on here?

I will tell you my experience from being in the industry.
Consumer Reports is very much a pay to play service.
I remember when a certain vacuum cleaner company mentioned to their dealers that they were able to pay for their ranking a certain year.

I had always been skeptical of consumer reports they typically like junk. Take a look at their other Appliance and car reviews.

This is one of the factors that led to the start of "performance reviews" for me.

My favorite comedy sketch.

Unlike many Vacuumlanders, I actually trust Consumer Reports’ objectivity in many of their tests. They do not accept any payment or advertising and are solely supported by their membership. They acquire their vacuums on the open marketplace just like any consumer and have a good record of recommending machines that perform well. My only complaint is that they stopped ranking suction only canisters separate from power nozzle canisters as they once did. Prioritizing carpet cleaning performance for suction only canisters is not helpful to consumers as most of us would not buy a suction-only canister for the sole purpose of cleaning carpets.

Unfortunately, there are many vacuum salespeople out there who are less than honest - with many in my personal experience outright lying to my face about things I know are not true. I was just in one of Montreal’s oldest vacuum shops looking for original Sanitaire bags. The salesman tried to get me to buy generic Envirocare bags, claiming that they are better because Sanitaire got bought by a Chinese company (Electrolux did not sell Sanitaire to Midea). And this kind of sales bs is why I often turn to CR to help with my purchases of all sorts of things - from laundry detergent to vacuums.

Far from objective/fair...

CR/CU has been sued twice over falsifying test results for the sake of sensational headlines. Once by Suzuki for their claims against the Samurai and it's stability (despite their test showing it was the most stable of the group tested). Also by Isuzu, for pulling basically the same stunt against the Trooper.

I don't have a scanner so I can't scan the article.CU is available at libraries or most stores. It does seem like CU does like junky vacuums over good ones-and the Sears vacuum recommendation is beyond me.Sears isn't going to be around much longer.Oh yes CU is very persnickety about posting their articles online. You could try looking up their results online on their website.
