I found this on the Canadian eBay website. It's clearly an Electrolux Model 30, but it's labeled as a "Jurisko". Looks like someone swapped the ribbed side trim pieces for some smooth ones. Where the word "ELECTROLUX" would be, there's a sticker that says "Jurisko". Any ideas on how this mystery machine came to be?

The way that decal is so irregularly applied seems like the work of an individual whose last name was Jurisko, and not the name of some obscure company. But, many an Electrolux XII was rebranded Goblin in the UK. |

Yeah, that branding is pretty crudely done. Definitely not a commercial re-label. Could be that somebody cobbled the machine together from a couple of junked ones and was so proud of his handiwork, he named it after himself.
Eurekavacs also has a point on it possibly having been a stage or TV prop. I seem to recall a sketch from, I think, the Carol Burnett Show being posted here a few months ago that involved a vacuum cleaner salesman demonstrating a re-badged Electrolux. |

Yeah, I remember that post. The vacuum was called the "Davis 500". As for the Jurisko, it could be that a vac shop got some old Electrolux Model XXXs in, and they decided to hack something together to put their name on the cleaner. As for it being a stage prop, it's unlikely. It looks like it was used regularly as a vacuum cleaner, not a prop. It also could be a commercial rebadge, likely done by some obscure company that likely shut down years ago. You have to remember, Electrolux rebuilders were common, and sometimes they would replace the side trim so that it had the rebuilder's name instead of the stock "Electrolux" text. I also find it strange how whoever did this fastened the replacement side trim on this machine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Model XXX side trim was fastened with screws. I know for a fact that the original side trim has no visible screws but this one has visible screws. Overall, it is a very strange bird! I am including a pic of the "Davis 500" from The Carol Burnett Show.

If it was cheaper I would not hesitate to buy it just for the uniqueness of it alone! It's a gamble, but on the off chance it could be a former prop that got passed through too many hands and ended up as a daily use cleaner, it could well be a prop. You cannot use name brands on most TV shows or movies, and with that big "ELECTROLUX" on the side, that wold have to be changed to avoid the licensing fees.
Who knows where or when. A prop doesn't have to be tidy if it's only to be used for 10 or 15 seconds screen time. Johnny Carson loved to use props on his show and a lot of them were crudely made and just slopped together in 10 minutes to talk about or use as a punchline for a joke, then away it went to be thrown out or in the prop warehouse. Those decals are period-applied based on the flaking and cracking on them, also it looks like it had two generations of the lettering applied based on the fading, with one set being bigger. It's also only on one side, so if it was sitting on a shelf as a background prop behind a character or something, you would only see the side facing the camera. Needs more research. |
