Please tell me ... being largely Hoover illiterate for models after the 1950s...

How old is this machine? Anything rare or outrageously special about it?

It appears to be a fairly recent take on Hoover's commercial series. Is this a younger sibling of the 918?

It's in immaculate condition -- "The photos do not do it justice." What appears to be scratches on the maroon hood are just reflections from my studio lighting.

I think that is from the very early 90's as I remember them in K-mart around then. That's all I know

Charles-Richard,

The age of that machine is the first 4 digits of the serial number.
Thats vintage 1989-1992 or so.

That is the Hoover Convertible 700 U4497.
It has a 6.5 amp PowerSurge motor and metal agitator with two rows of brushes and two rows of beater bars.
Normal speed= 5.5 amps
PowerSurge speed= 6.5 amps

I have this exact same model. It runs smooth and quiet for a plastic base Convertible. It really digs into the carpet and leaves nice lines!

1289 is the first four digits of the serial number on mine.
Is mine made in December 1989 or is it made in the 12th week of 1989?

That would be Dec. 1989, In the early 90's our neighbor had that exact same vac. I loved as a little kid to go over and Help Nancy vacuum with that vacuum, I especially loved the power Surge. I also loved helping our other neighbor Dorothy vacuum, She had a blue and white Concept 1 with cord winder(not a powerdrive model) and they also had a Portapower for the cars. I loved this as I thought they both had the greatest vacuums and our Elite 200 was just ok.
