Well it is the early metal hood model

phaeton's profile picture
Hello All and Hoover61,
Oh, I’m going to anger some I guess, but I am old so it is a bit more acceptable possibly.
It is the early Hoover 28 with a Serial Number of 2829178 with the metal hood and as you say this idiot might have decided to trade it in on a newer Hoover 61.
Or let’s try this one, the Hoover 28 was well used and perhaps something might have gone wrong with it so why not get a Hoover 61 rather than fixing it.
The Hoover 28 Serial Number are from 2379001 to 4657595.
Now as far as Hoover Specials go I do believe on Vascuumland I have seen a Hoover 61 with that label on it.
As helpful as Hoover61 is to Vacuumland Members, I just cannot see calling anyone an idiot but possibly in jest.
I would bid on the vacuum in question just for the novelty of having a 28 that was a Special, but I have an early metal hood and late Bakelite hood Hoover 28.
I just might bid on it because it is a Special, but just how may 28s does one need or I need.
Thank you for looking,
Pete

I has asked Tom A about this....

He said that Hoover discontinued their rebuild program in 1950, with the introduction of the model 29, and the 62. So this would have to been rebuilt absolutely no later then 1950.

I think the machine you have see before is a model 60, not a 61. They look almost identical to the naked eye. I have also seen a 150 Special, as well as a 27 Special too.

100 percent correct Jae, it was a 60

phaeton's profile picture
Hello All and Jae,
You are correct Jae, what I saw was the 60. (See Thread Number 29565)
I just don't see a problem with either a 28 or a 60 being traded in for a newer model or in need of repair.
The 60 pictured seems to have been turned into a 61 as it no longer has a 60 the rectangular handle nor handle release. It looks like the factory had to modify the hood so they could add the foot release and then used the 61 round handle.
Interesting it has been stamped 9 52 so I guess the factory rebuilt it in 1952?
I can't say I would want a 60 that was turned somewhat into a 61 as the novelty of the handle release is gone.
Thank you for looking,
Pete

how could that be rebuilt in 1952...

When the rebuild program was discontinued in 1950?

Could the date of 1950 be wrong?

phaeton's profile picture
Hello All and Jae,
I just re-read Thread Number 29565 and Hooverboy81 indicates he has a Hoover 825 Special that was rebuilt in 1951. If you read this Thread all the way to the end it does seem Hoover was rebuilding vacuums much longer than the 1950 date and that the September 1952 just might be a correct date for that Hoover 60 Special.
Thank you for looking,
Pete

Here are a couple pics of my Hoover 700 Special that was rebuilt in Jan. 1952 according to the date stamped on it. It was given to me by a friend who lives across the street from me. So we know that Hoover was still doing Special rebuilds in 1952. However, it's possible they may have ended the program by the end of the year, or soon after.

The rebuild program was discontinued in 1950? Unless I am reading it wrong (the lettering is very faint, hard to even photograph) I do believe my Hoover 700 Special says "3-22-62 RR" in fat black marker on the underside on the right side of the machine. It is serial #7558988. Unless that was not written there by Hoover. There is no other markings on the machine. My vacuum does have the same plastic on/off switch on it that Hoover Convertibles have, but it is red. Also has that familiar white ribbed vacuum cord.

If the date was written on it with a marker, it is most likely a service date. The factory Special rebuilds had the date stamped on with metal stamps showing the month and year. For example, my 700 Special is stamped 1-52, indicating January 1952, and Pete's 60 Special is stamped 9-52 for September 1952. If you look at the 3rd of the 4 pics Pete posted, you will see the date stamped near the model and serial #s.

Thanks for the help, hygiene903 ! I found the rebuild stamp, it was so tiny I never noticed it amongst the striations in the metal. July 1936 is my vacuum's rebuild. It was only what...7 or 8 years old then? I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad sign. lol

I am curious, as to what there is left to discover about....

dirtmaster37's profile picture
Do not post here much, so take what one is about to say, as you will...BUT..

Could it possibly be that larger FACTORY service centers were doing this work LONGER than the actual factory was ???

For example, Mrs Brown and her lovely daughter happen in with their old cleaner, and Mr. Green sells her a spanking new model 62. What would they have done with the old? Rebuild. To factory specifications, especially with Hoover then.. Hoover SPECIAL tags could have been added??

Am thinking that it's no secret that a larger dealer could get everything under the sun directly from the factory parts bins, to complete such a feat. And, it wouldn't surprise one whatsoever that the factory "rebuild tags" were offered up as well to be added to a branch "rebuilt" cleaner. Hoover was if anything incredibly methodical as to it's "what is allowed" , what is "not allowed", and "expected of each branch"..

This was quite true as late as the early 2000's when was manager of a factory service branch. If the factory did it that way, you BEST be doing it exactly the same..LOL!! ALL of the printed material one used to run his or her branch, was material used, and ideals used for years. The way much of the Branch Operating Manual read, with crystal clear instruction giveth..was clearly written with various prose, and verbiage; using words, and phraseology from bygone era. Very much from a late 1950's early 1960's slant. So it goes...

Am thinking that nothing can be, or should be left out of the equation here; because none of us were there, and even the most knowledgeable may not have all answers. Yes we can learn things from that base, but in any case (s), factories and their branches did LOTS of things that baffle the learning aficionado, and much yet that we have yet TO learn.

Or ever really can, as the principals then are all...DEAD.

Clearly one of two things exist. Either the factory was still doing rebuild SPECIALS later than the 1950 supplied cutoff date given, or it was done in a large factory branch. These stamped date plates are pretty refutable proof that something was still going on...

IN fact, I had read someplace, and heard from another that the Rebuilt SPECIALS were available all the way up to the model 634. Which was incidentally much later than 1950. Is this fact, or fiction. I have no factory materials to back up such claims, but truthfully, I could certainly see that being a very real possibility.

So on it goes..

Zero disrespect for the person mentioned for the above information, I know one personally, and hold him in quite high regard. That said, unless there is factory printed documentation....there is still vast possibilities left to discover.

Kind Regards...

Chad

I have to agree with Hoover61 about the hood

phaeton's profile picture
Hello All and Hoover61,
I would have to agree with you about Hoover using the newer Hoover 61 Hood on a Hoover 60 Special as who would want it with a scratch hood. That would not have been so good.
Wondering what Hoover would have done if there were no scratches on the hood.
It would have been interesting to know what the trade-in value was and what was charged for a Special.
Chad is right, the people that would know aren't with us anymore.
I receive a Hoover 61 a few days ago and while I am not sure that this is where I should Post it I am going to as we seem to be discussing Hoover 60 and Hoover 61 on this Thread.
I will also have some pictures of parts to a Hoover 300 that might be useful for someone so I will add them to that Post.
Thank you for looking,
Pete

My just received Hoover 61 and parts not need of Hoover 300

phaeton's profile picture
Hello All,
I really did not want to buy the Hoover 61 but it looked to be in reasonably good condition and from the picture I could tell it had the Handisac outer bag but was not mentioned that it did have.
As it turned out it had the complete Handisac system with the bag clip which I have painted.
I did ask the seller for a picture of the bottom of it just to make sure it had the belt cover and the agitator brushroll and they did add the picture to their listing.
It took several days for me to decide to buy it.
It was packed really good with the base in one box and the handle it another box. So I cautiously unpacked it and it was just as pictured and not one scratch on the hood and no wear marks on the handle. The base showed the usual scuffs and an odd
2 x 7 inch strange mark on the front of the base. The bottom was exceptionally clean with what looks like rubber stamped Thick and Medium which the dealer must have added as I do not recall seeing before this vacuum. It also still has the original cord that has some minor cracking going on. The bumper is near perfect. The brushes in the agitator brushrool look like they are new. When I received the 61 it had a Handisac in it that looked really old, sorry it is the last picture. I don't think the 61 had been used in a long time.
The outer bag is in great shape for being close to 70 years old. Now the poor bellows of the Handisac adapter have split and in not really usable.
I started to look for the Hoover 63 bellows that was used for the “C” bags and there it was, a Hoover 63 Handisac adapter with good bellows so I bought it and a “C” type bellows also as I had the tube part from a Hoover Convertible. I now need the wire spring that goes inside the bellows and the 63 bag ring and then one can use either the “C” bag or the F&G bag which I think might be better than the “C” bag. I like the 63 Handisac adapter better than the original 61 Handisac adapter as the 63 is about an inch shorter and also does not have the lip at the end. I would guess you might be asking why he doesn’t take one of the Handisac adapters apart for the spring wire and make the “C” bag adapter work? Well while not being a purist and just can’t do that.
I only have the middle bedroom with carpet and I only seem to use a Shark Navigator, (expendable vacuum but works well), I bought at a thrift shop and repaired the latches. So not any of my Hoovers, Royals, Montgomery Ward or Electrolux vacuums get used.
I have added pictures of the 61 plus the parts to the 300 that I do not need and someone might want. I believe the bottom bearing is not good and the fan is no good. Someone did some re-wiring on the motor and the carbon brushes are really short, I used the good ones that were in it.
Thank you for looking,
Pete

Hello All,
I said bought a Hoover 63 Handisac adapter but it could be a Hoover 62 Handisac
adapter. I am not sure which it is.
Thank you for looking,
