I have always wanted one

Mostly for the novelty factor. I know they are little more than a powered carpet sweeper.

I also think the idea of a "Cat Chaser" would be fun.

I do think the technology will come along and someday there will be a robotic that has the power to do a real vacuum cleaning job, for now they are in the learning stages.

Most of them are pretty bad . There not meant to replace a full-sized Vacuum.
I was interviewed at a previous employer on the news about the subject.

We vacuum connoisseurs who don't prefer bagless would have the same argument about the robots... the disgust of manually cleaning out a bin of nastiness, just on a smaller scale. Related, I can only imagine a robot's CFM is inferior to that of any bagless upright (much less bagged). It also is not particularly good at above ground cleaning... it wants for quality attachments... it has limited functionality.

So, agreed, it is an interesting novelty, but the reasons many of us are enamored by a variety of vacuums are just not part of the value equation of robots. They certainly will resonate with a different segment of the buying public, those particularly fond of cordless, bagless stick vacs, I imagine.

They are HORRIBLE! And also spy on you!

fantomtechguy's profile picture
Well, over the years I find most people believe the Roombas or other "robot" cleaners are better than the traditional upright vacuum. I am here to say that is complete nonsense! Robot vacuum cleaners only grab the surface dirt, no "robot" vacuum is capable enough to tackle the deeply beaded dirt, sand and grit that can be trapped between the carpet. Some "robot" "vacuums" even state in their manuals that you should use a regular upright before using it to prevent clogs and maintenance. And to add, Roomba has been caught collecting your home's details (Mapping your house). They collect data of the size of the room(s) you have it in! All of that data goes back to Roomba and they sell it to advertisers.

So to end this rant, don't waste your money on ANY "Robot" "Vacuum"

Below is the link to the Roomba spying article

Reading the article, it appears that the roomba mapps your rooms as part of it's cleaninig pattern and this data has the potential to be collected. At this time irobot does not actually collect this data, and it seems they don't have any plans to (especially after the public reaction to the potential). Alarming, but not the reality at this time.

As for robot vacuums in general, I don't mind them. I feel they are overpriced but are useful for what they are. Of course they don't deep clean, I wouldn't expect a cordless stick vac to deep clean so why would I expect a robot to do so?

I have a robot vacuum in my apartment, which I share with three roommates. I don't have time to vacuum the kitchen and living room as frequently as it really needs, so I let the robot do it a couple times a week. The area is all hard floors with one low pile rug. It makes the area look presentable while I work on other things or go to class. Otherwise the area would be a complete mess.

The robot is a neato XV series, and I got it on sale about 3 and a half years ago and it still works perfectly. I've replaced the batteries, filters, and nothing else.

Robot vacuums have come a very long way in the last 15 years, and I believe the technology will continue to improve with time.

I’ve had a roomba 680 now for 3 years. All I’ve done to it is replace the brushes and filter as needed. It gets used everyday and I dump the almost full bin every 3 days or so. I love it. Use it for my downstairs which is all tile and a couple throw rugs. It does a great job. Honestly I’ll be buying another one when this one stops working entirely.

Shaylee and I have several and really enjoy them but mostly for the novelty of it.
They do pick up a lot of surface dirst/pet hair but they don't deep clean anything. All it is is basically a dustbuster motor with a carpet sweeper brush but its effective for whats it's meant for and that's the in between vacuuming. I hate when I hear someone say I don't need a vacuum I have a robot.

Our favorite models that we have are Roomba 560 and miele scout. I really want a neato.

robot vacuums

As has been sttated, they will not take the place of a full size vacuum, but are good for those in between cleaning sessions. I think the Neato robots are the best ones, probably the most powerful and their navigation is very good.

and quickly got rid of it. It clogged and did a mind trip on her two dogs!
I just saw the HOOVER version the other day, for only $100.00 As a novelty, or to add to your collection(just to say you have one) might be fun. But, I'll pass. I say another one, non-Hoover, for $150. Once, I saw a "Roomba" on sale for $75.00
YIKES !!
I could see my two cats, especially "Harold", with a robotic cleaner!!!!!!

Instead of Hoover making robot vacuums, since its 2017, they should make a remake version of the famous convertible upright calling it the Convertible 60, marking it the 60th anniversary of Hoover's best cleaners.👍 Just an idea.

Simply-a handless, cordless, self propelled SWEEPER!--NOT a vacuum. They at present form CANNOT replace a traditional vacuum cleaner for deep cleaning!Yes,just use them to amuse your dog or cat. They can make more of a mess-if the robot plows thru a doggy doughnut!-then spreads it around!

Common. Even best of them cheaper than actually good vacuum. And average one doesn't stand comparison with top roomba mops. And we're taking here only cleaning ability. But it's to be forgotten that they are f*ing automatic robots!hello here! We're embraced crazy future and you're complaining about it/
And on the top of that, they're evolving and getting better and better. Check what we've got in 2017 tenrows.com/robot-vacuum/...

Because if I'm not pushing the thing around myself then there's no fun in it!

I actually know a friend or two who love their robot vacs. These are parents with kids but no dogs or cats. Both parents work and are constantly running to take the kids to school or hockey or ballet or somewhere, or to shop and run errands...and so the robot vacs in essence replace the light-duty stick vacs that are used to do quick surface cleaning - not high power weekly deep cleaning. While the family is out of the house, the robot vac is picking up cookie crumbs in the living room and spilled salt in the kitchen. It just reduces the litter the parents have to deal with later on the weekend, or helps get a head start on messes between visits by the cleaning lady.

I’ll tell you one thing

I have had 3 iRobot Roombas. My first was an early model, the 440, next the 530, I currently have a 790 that I got last Christmas and I love it! It’s way more advanced than the other two I had. I also have a NeatoRobotics XV Signature Pro. That thing has had more trouble than anything else. I’ve called customer support to get the same bs I always get. I hate it. It works beautifully for the first year of ownership, then it craps out. And the warranty? Oh, it’s only a year. That explains everything. And I’m not the only one, I tell friends, it’ll break after a year, then a year later they ask me to fix it. I would get a roomba only because of their over a decade of experience. Go for a 700 or 800 (non WiFi versions). The WiFi models create maps which these companies sell to the black market for other companies to use to “better understand the houses for technology advancements,” whatever that’s supposed to mean. Anyway, that’s my long A** story. By the way, they will never replace a house vacuum. The hardware on the neatos are probably the best, but the software sucks. Service sucks too. Never try to service one!!!

I have a couple of roombas, they have their place. They do a good job sweeping crumbs up on a daily basis. Around here a couple of times a year we have ants coming in looking for food. If you have crumbs, they'll help you clean them!

Terrible suction though and they get stuck occasionally.

As for mapping households, go for it, my county (as most any county) lists square footage for my address if anyone needs it.

Owning a good robot is a revelation. 98% of robotic vacuums historically have been trash, but once you own a good one, it's a game-changer. It's so nice to come home after a long day, to a freshly-vacuumed home. Run regularly, a good robot can take care of most everyday dirt. My Neato always exceeds expectations. I just wish they lasted longer before they need new batteries, or they start to glitch. Regardless, I'll never go without one, and I welcome further industry improvements.

Owning a real robot vacuum is fantastic, and it's something that needs to be experienced to be believed. I highly recommend the Neato brand. It's still the smartest (their superior navigation system is still patented), and likely still cleans the best.

I guess to me, I'd prefer to come home to a filthy, nasty carpet after a long day of work, and relax while giving it a thorough vacuuming. I'd honestly feel cheated if I came home and the carpet was all vacuumed. I so deeply enjoy running the vacuum that the idea of letting a robot do it is extremely unappealing to me.

I am using roomba 980 for about 2 years now. So far, it's working perfectly. All what I had done is little maintenance. I have to change the brushes and filters after specific period of time. After I am done with this one, I will probably buy another from the same company. It is also ranked higher in reviews done by different web owners as you can see here www.10machines.com/best-v...

My grandma had one, my dog used it as a skateboard. To me, they’re pointless, especially with animals. If you’re training a pup (like I was,) having a robotic machine is just all around bad. I can’t say how many times I’ve cleaned smears of dog poop out of both my grandmothers machine and her carpet.

Dog poop and robot vacuums-Happened out here-a dog owner had his dogs poop spread about by a Roomba--The sad remains of the Roomba were seen by the vac shop with the question can it be repaired????the Roomba in question was "executed" at close range by a 12Ga shotgun!!The answer was NO!I didn't see the Roomba-wished I could have!

Dyson 360

The Dyson does a decent job vacuuming. It's the best robotic vacuum I've seen. I'll take some pics or vids of it sometime. It's not perfect, but it seems to do a very good job for its size. It's not a Kirby or a Miele, but it captures a lot of dirt and leaves the carpet looking very nice.

Of course they don't, if they're honest, the robots were meant to be a convenient way to keep the house looking nice between uses of the real vacuum, they were never intended to replace a regular vacuum for deep cleaning, But telling customers they can stop vacuuming altogether is a nice sales pitch, so it stuck...

To elabroate on my brief post above, Dyson wins it.

sleepdoc's profile picture
The Miele Scout, the first generation red model, sweeps the wood floor well enough to use it, but it's not awesome, not what I would expect from Miele. I hope Miele does a better job with the forthcoming second generation. I have a Dyson 360 upstairs with four carpeted rooms, a fairly large hall and stair landing and two tiled bathrooms. I have to say that I'm really impressed with the job it does. It takes up to 15 hours to clean the whole level, including 3-4 recharges, but I'm at work that long more often than not, so it can clean the whole level during a work day. It's not a perfect robot, but its software is regularly updated, so it's been improving since it was introduced, and it's by far the best robot-mounted vacuum I've ever seen. Since it cleans bedrooms, it picks up a lot of very fine dust, and after regular use for a year, there's almost no dust on the pre-motor filter and none at all on the post-motor filter. Having said all of that, I should point out that I paid $300 for it NIB, ie 30% of the retail price, which I never would even consider paying for that, even though it's really good. For the price I did pay, considering it was brand new, I'm really happy with it. If someone were disabled and had a serious need for a robotic vacuum, this is the one I would recommend.

I don't have any photos of it that I can think of, but I'd be happy to take some and post them if anyone is interested.
