I got my 102 today. Rather poor shape but I think it is restorable. The biggest problem is one of the bag holder bolt holes broke off from the base. That might require a bit of soldering or welding or something like that. The motor and brushroll turn freely which is not too much of a supprise (Hoover durability!), although it was stored outside. I think almost every bit of bare aluminum will need to be abraised to some extent. The surface rust is not coming off too easily, and the inside is full of nastyness. The brass motor nameplate came out nicely, but that is all I have dealt with so far.

The bag is interesting. It is one of the rare early bags, and in pretty poor shape as can be expected. I'm going to say this was a replacement made during the 541 era, because it supports both a bag spreader and the older centeral bag strap hookup. Its pretty cool.

Overall its going to be a interesting restoration project. It should look quite nice with my Baby Model 103.

And a different view. As you can see, a big problem with the bag holding bolt. You can also see some crud inside the cleaner itself.

Another view. This 102 has the old style fan that has no backing disk. The other thing that should be noted about the old style fans is the mounting method. Instead of having a threaded shaft and threaded belt pully it has a pully attached to the fan that is then attached to the shaft with a screw through the side of the fans hub. This screw fits into a flat part of the motor shaft and keeps the fan in proper position.

And lastly the bag. This is the side that is in better condition. The other side has a fairly large hole in it.

Good luck with your restorations! I have a feeling your biggest task will be fixing the bag bolt...welding aluminum is tough work, so I hear! I'm going to shoot you an email, because I might have something you could use... :-)
