Started with a fantastic home made meal after our 13 hour drive. Fried Chicken, mashed taters and gravy, pineapple casserole, cabbage casserole with onions, squash casserole, home made biscuits, mac and cheese, banana pudding, apple cake, and North Carolina sweet tea.

The Spencer portable. Just like the huge one at the Fox theater, only you can drag it around your house. It only weighs 75 pounds.

Some of the vacuums from the late Mike Hays collection. We took a sledgehammer to the Dirt Devil. Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. And Glory. Threw it right in the dumpster. Where it should've been right after it was built.

The Apex Strato. One of the most powerful home vacuums I've ever seen. Over 110 inches of water lift in 1957. It was also one of the most expensive vacuum cleaners. It was $150, and the Electrolux was $89. So quiet. The fan is as big as a dinner plate. The motor is upside down in the machine.

Nice meals-Neat collections of vacuums-the Kenmore with the powenozzler was like the one my Stepmom had-same color-hers didn't have the power nozzle. The Spencer portable was just like the one at the VOA DC plant studios. Before being used as a portable vacuum-it collected cuttings from the disc recorders in their Central Recording.I cleaned the commentator of the VOA one-had a Lamb motor.Used it to clean up the demo mess from the old studios. That machine ate the stuff with no problem. Was as much fun to use as an NSS M1!

Thanks for the pictures. Some great machines there.
Tom what year is your newly acquired Lewyt from? The PN is slightly different than mine and oddly enough mine is dated 1960. Only other one of the corded ones I've ever seen was Dave's in Canada and his was dated 1956-57.

I'm just trying to figure out why mine has a different label and is dated so much later even though it's NOT the electronic.

The Lewyt I got from Hans was the 1957 model. It has the external cord that just lays on the floor during use. So inconvenient.

awesome vacuums

Tom, reading about some of those canisters, I'm drooling. That Apex sounds similar to the sunbeam dual deluxe. So, the Lewyt that you got, is that one of the zappers? Better be careful, lol. I think they made three power nozzle models, one was not a zapper but the other two were. That lady Kenmore sounds very nice, based on the time it was made, it would probably use the Ametek motor that I am so fond of. Sounds like everyone had a great time, wish I could have been there.
Mike

Actually

The Apex Strato is as quiet as a Model G Electrolux but a slightly different sound.

The Lady Kenmore

Uses a 4750 Lamb motor.Same as the Lewyt and Compact and Filter Queen of the same era.

4750 motor

I think that motor was also used in the compact C6 and the Eureka canned ham vibrabeat. I absolutely love the sound of that motor, a nice pleasant sound, the Electrolux 1205 sounds very similar although it's a completely different motor. A nice D flat note, or I guess you could call it C sharp as well. I think Eureka may have also used that motor in their rotomatics of that time as well, and Airway also used it.

The Lady Kenmore is a 2 speed motor, I was half asleep when I posted the above comment...LOL

difference in motor sound

Compare the sound of those motors to the high pitch screaming jet motor sound of today's vacuums, the older motors sounded so much better, there are a few vacuums that still use two stage motors, but they are few and far between. That's why I love the sound of the rainbow e2 and Sirena, they sound like older motors.
Mike
