We have this small, mounted vac. Any idea what it was?

Gail,

For starters, this model 193 looks like an upside-down Prince hand vacuum!

I do wish one of our VCCC correspondents here could tell you more about this relic!

relic!

Wow, using this as a hand vac would be a work out! Thank you for responding.

Most likely--

--an eraser vac near blackboards in schools.

that makes sense

We got this from an old school so that makes so much sense now! Thank you so much. We probably won't keep it but it was driving us crazy :-)

That is neat!

It does indeed appear to be an upside down Royal 501 Prince hand vac. The first thing I thought of when I saw your picture is the old Hoover bag cleaning machine(s), but cleaning erasers seems like a more likely intended use for this gadget given its smaller size and its residence in an old school.

Not sure why you don't want to keep it. It sure is a neat artifact. I've never seen/heard of this setup before, but maybe that just the limit of my knowledge. Nevertheless, I would hate to see it get trashed. I'm sure a collector here would like to have it if you don't.

I'm thinking that it may have started out as a regular hand vac, then customized by a custodian at the school where you found it. I've never seen one modified that way before.

Sherlock Holmes

I'd bet that you can figure out what it was used for by the contents of the inside of the bag. If it was an eraser cleaner, it'll be full of chalk dust.

Sherlock,

Good thought!! So we checked it and found there is more dust on the outside of the bag than inside. Someone cleaned it up good before storing it away.

I remember my elementary school having an electric eraser cleaning machine but I don't remember if it was anything like that one. I haven't seen or even thought about that device in more than 40 years. After doing some quick It may have been more like the one in the link below:
