Hi Guys!

Via the Manchestervacs forum, a chap very local to myself came round last night with a Hoover Ranger that needed some love. I fitted a new fan, oiled the bearings and replaced the roller bearings for him and he was delighted. It was his grandfathers, he inherited it. A collector in the making (although he is older than myself)!

He then gave me another cleaner his mother had found in her loft. It had been there at least 30 years... But I don't know what it is! The ratings plate gives a Model A30, but apart from 'Made in Britain', there is not other markings inside or out that I can see!

Has anyone ever seen one before? It runs well anyway, and will probably work alot better after a refurb and clean up

I think

....it looks like a 'spinney' brand type of budget machine sold through the catalogues during the late 1950's until around the middle of the 1960's. Similar cleaners were supplied to department stores such as lewis's between the 1950's/early 60's. The plastic hose on yours would suggest to me that it dates from circa 1963.

I will hazard a guess these machines were made by phoenix.

The tools would have been of the basic goblin type. The carpet nozzles were usually slightly shorter than the goblin, laterally in plastic, cream or grey to match the hose.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Walter. Shropshire.

Now you say Spinney, I think you are correct! And searching google for Spinney Vacuumland bought up some lovely scans which had almost identical machines in! Different paint jobs and slightly differing tools, but the machine is the same!

What I must have then is the vintage equivilant of a £19.99 Asda bagless vacuum ceaner!

Thanks your your help! Now to find some tools (or at least a floor tool. I do have an all metal head deep in the shed, but that's from an Electrolux and 32mm, so some bodgery would have to happen to fit to the narrow tools of the Spinney... Anyone got any spinney tools to sell? I can measure the diameter if needed, but it's narrower than 32mm for sure

Sam

Hi Sam

It appears it probably was sold under the Spinney name but it was made by Siroma Engineering Corp, who made generic machines for a lot of stores. Here's a 1967 catalog page that shows the same machine in a different colour scheme.
