I wonder if it occurred to those who voted to legalize marijuana that they would be confronted at every turn by people smoking it and spewing its fetid stench everywhere.

The stuff smells so rotten that you can smell it all around the area when someone is smoking it. It's everywhere -- driving behind someone smoking it. Living next to people smoking it. Having to wave past partakers to get into the 7-11. Catching the malodorous fumes on the beach. And so on, and so on, and so on.

No, I'm not being self-righteous or judgmental about it. Let those who want to smoke it enjoy themselves. I'm just commenting on the vile stink of it and wishing that smokers could be more aware of where and when they decide to light up.

(We have a neighbor who begins just about every day by stepping outside and smoking a joint, filling the entire area around our buildings with ganja fumes. Granted, he was smoking even before it was legalized, but now he can do so with impunity.)

I have a feeling that eventually the tide will turn when people get tired of smelling it all the time.

Put ALL smokers in a dome that keeps THEIR smoke in with them-think THAT will fix these problems!

There was a time in my life when I used to like to indulge in that stuff but that was a very long time ago and it is no longer compatible with the life I choose to lead. On the rare occasion I do catch a whiff of it on the air, usually somewhere like an outdoor music festival, it will momentarily take me back to an earlier, more carefree time in my life--and then I remember why I quit. I have no desire whatsoever to do that anymore but I don't begrudge others doing so. It's just not for me anymore.

But I do understand Charles' reaction regarding the odor. I feel much the same way about tobacco smoke and hated living in an apartment next to a smoker. Tolivac's dome comment reminded me of a professor I had as an undergraduate. When a student asked if she could smoke in class, he responded, "Only if you wear a helmet". It's a visual that's stuck with me for almost 35 years of someone wearing a fishbowl helmet, their face completely obscured by smoke.

Looking back on my undergraduate days, I did actually have a couple of professors who smoked in class. One was in the drama department and she chain smoked her unfiltered Pall Malls all through class and encouraged others to light up as well if they wished, second hand smoke be damned. I also had a philosophy professor who timed his lectures with cigarettes. He would lay out three cigarettes along the top of the chalkboard and when the last one was done, so was he. He couldn't see very well and it was amusing when he'd occasionally try to light a piece of chalk.

When I was in graduate school a few years later, faculty could only smoke in their offices and graduate TA's had a lounge where it was permitted, but the wooden desks in the classrooms bore evidence that smoking in class was not that distant of a memory. By the time I finished my classwork, most of them had been refinished and fitted with Formica tops. That's all a far cry from the college where I teach now. All forms of tobacco are banned--indoors or out. When I first started teaching there a decade ago, they had wooden gazebos placed strategically away from buildings that were clearly designated as smoking areas, the idea being to provide an alternative to doorways.

That Crap is popular amongst "My Crowd".
I've never had an interest in it. The image of me with a joint in my hand just doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather spend my hard earned money on my Vacuums.
It seems like the people my age who "indulge" in it think it makes them The Boss. Once or twice a month, some kid at the school is caught trying to light up in a bathroom...They see it as some sort of Status Sign.
I've been offered it, but I'll pass. I really don't care if people want to do it. Its their life. Its just not for me. Haven't tried it, and don't plan to.
Just my 2 cents...

A SMART YOUNG MAN!!!

I grew up in a house full of cigarette smoke, that was bad enough!!!

Post# 376587 , Reply# 5   8/8/2017 at 23:58 (2,424 days old) by Real1shep (Walla Walla, WA)

I can empathize with the smell. A neighbor down the street died a few yrs ago in an old house that probably hadn't been cleaned in 20 yrs. His daughters decended upon the scene and spent the better part of a week cleaning the house. They could be seen taking breaks at the front door with elbow length rubber gloves. I thought that was great; they'd sell the house and we'd get some new neighbors. Well.....

One of the daughters moved in with a husband and some ragtag relatives. First thing they did was build a fence in the back yard and took a couple of feet from their neighbor without asking and some of her plants to. Then they treated the fence with creosote, which is illegal. After that died down, turns out the husband is a 'grower'. The neighborhood is full of kids. The pot plants grow over the top of the six ft fence. They throw some temporary crap up there to hide them.

And then there's the smoking.....smells exactly like a skunk had just walked down the center of the street. I don't see the plants this yr yet, but the skunk travels frequently. Their nextdoor neighbor built her dream house and is thinking of leaving. Her house was in Better Homes & Gardens. She's 73 and I hurt for her. She's talked to them, been down to talk to the City etc, etc.

I don't really have anything against pot and I did my share when I was young & stupid. My son in Nashville (formally NYC) does it all the time with his live-in GF. Over the yrs, I have seen see the stuff just rob any ambition that he had. I'll admit, it's different for everybody but there's a lot of research out there (and some compelling stuff by a Harvard neurologist) that pot and the developing teen & young adult brain is not a good mix. They think now the prefrontal cortex doesn't develop completely in some adults until 24.  Pot can retards that process and lowers IQ's permanently for young users that are frequent smokers.

I must be in the minority here, but I love the smell, as long as it isn't the cheap skunky smelling stuff. I don't smoke but I occasionally vape indoors or take edibles to help me sleep and to help with pain in my hips. Where I live, people smoking cigarettes around every bus stop is much more of a problem.

I agree that it has medicinal properties beyond the traditional smoking part. In tablet form or chocolates/carmels it has some medical value. You can get it so that the canniboids are elevated and the 'stoned' part (THC) is low. However, you can't fully escape the 'stoned' part. I think the best formula for pain & sleep is 50% canniboids and 50% THC (that's what the guy at the dispensary said).  It's been legal here in WA for some time. The state politcitians are literally drooling to fill their depleted coffers with tax revenue from the stuff. We have two dispensaries here in town.  No doubt the neighbor is suppling some of their product. They're putting in a warehouse where a old service staton used to be. That should prove interesting.

In WA at least, it's here to stay and it's not going to be undone except by the Feds. They've been talking about legalizing pot across the US since the late 60's some 48yrs. I don't see it any worse than alcohol, but should be treated the same with respect to minors & driving. With respect to the 'war on drugs', going after just pot smokers has been a trillion dollar travesty and a sham. They should be ashamed of the careers generated and the dollars spent to stem the unending tide of pot use/sales. They need instead to concentrate on all the people hooked on opioids.....the death rate there is staggering/mind numbing.

I too must agree with the before mentioned parties. I absolutely love the sweet, sweet smell of its burning couch effervescence. I particularly love the DNA damage it does to your body and mind. Why, it must be like chain smoking a carton of burnt rubber bands soaked in cat urine. Oh, the smell is so sublime.

I have personally never experienced any "stoned" feeling from what I use. THC causes that, not CBD. The varieties I use have basically no THC, only CBD. About 2-3 hours after taking it, I get extremely tired and fall asleep. It is ridiculous that it is still considered a class 1 drug, when common cigarettes and alcohol can actually kill people.

At the Public Safety Building where I work the S.O. has an evidence room. There has got to be some 30+ old Mary Jane they haven't destroyed. In the winter with the heat going in that closed room you can smell it throughout the building and gives me a headache. I can't understand why you would want your house, car,or anything to smell like old a$$.

Yes, there's nothing quite better than firing up a good Ol' blunt cigar and laying back and listenin' to some of that Led Zappelin on a Stereo 8. I just can't wait until they make brothels legal again...Oh yes! As They say," Different strokes for different folks."

Not for me,

but I know some need it medicinally.
I knew a a guy who toked daily for years. He is paranoid and a mess today. A lonely bitter 60 year old.
Still, it isn't as damaging as alcohol. Absinthe became legal again in 2008.
I don't believe it to be a gateway drug. If a person has the genes to be an addict, or is weak, they may use harder drugs.
Self esteem is a factor in why people abuse anything.
Immature young people tend to experiment more because they are not aware of or face no consequences for irresponsible behavior yet.
Dry counties are dry until you venture deep in the woods. Hypocracy abounds.
Pick your poisons. Life is short. Live, live, live! Until we die.
Mushrooms anyone?

My only dog in this fight is about minors using it to excess and the folks who swear by it medicinally. Minors are too stupid/inexperienced/vulnerable for pot & alcohol.  I've been to the dispensary here, talked to the people there. I'd like something for pain & sleep. I can deal with the pain during the waking hrs, but all through the night is a little much. I keep blaming the beds, but I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.

Kevin,

do you have back pain, hip, or both? I also know that canabis helps cancer patients.
I saw this pain devise on TV with a 30 day money back guarantee. It's black, and you wear it around your leg. It administers something in a time delay manner.
Anything is better than opioids, unless no alternative. If it's hip related, replacements are done without much complication.
My better half has had a herniated disk since 1995. he does the proper exercises and has not had to have surgury or take pain meds other than the 3 times he's had an episode causing immobility. The last one was in 2004. No chairopractor either.

I'm not sure what's going on. I'm pretty sturdy from the work I do and my back has never been really injured all these yrs. I just got health insurance through the state, so I'll probably be checking all that out. Being self-employed in WA has been too expensive to get health insurance on my own. $1,000/month will buy you catastrophic insurance with a high deductible. I'm not paying into that scam. Another yr and I'll have Medicare.

I'm not doing drugs like opioids. If you have a link to that pain release-as-you-sleep thing, please PM me. I've tried every bed on the market including memory foam. Well...haven't tried the $3,000 air bed and I'm not gonna.

Kevin,

maybe arthritis? Best of luck anyhow! Hubby has chronic shoulder pain also now.
Alieve works, but too much ansaids aren't good either. He is seeing an orthopedic specialist Wed.
We are thankful to have employer insurance. It isn't cheap either with a moderate deductable. You don't want a high one at our ages.
A friend also had insurance through the state while unemployed. They make you unsubscribe within 30 days of employment, before you even meet the probation period date.

Thanks. I was able to get the state insurance because I'm raising my grandson. We got it together. Certainly could be some sort of arthritis. My mom had some weird form of arthritis and they told her if she lived long enough, she'd outlive it....she did.  I did the Alieve thing and it does work, but like you said long term it's not good for you either.

not even tried it ONCE. Neither my sister nor I ever smoked. I hate the smell/ VERY FEW of my friends smoke. Everyone KNOWS better to even THINK about smoking in my car, home, etc. Both of our parents smoked, and paid a high price for it. I won't go into details, but, suffice it to say, both of them have awfully gruesome deaths. Sadly, I witnessed both of them.
As far as pa9n management goes, most of you might know that I suffer with headaches. In a given month, I may have a headache 20 days out of 31. Excedrin is the only thing that helps me.
Especially when all of the carpenters were here working on the house, I had a developed a little pharmacy in one of the drawers. There is... aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, and Alleve. Most of that is there for other people.

I needed a sugar fix

yesterday. Some times the craving is stronger than the will. So I'm done with it for at least a month. Nutty Buddies are tasty, as was the sour cream with Nutella filling cake I made, and no I did not polish it all off. I sent it to work this morning with my step son.
I nip the red wine about every other day. Just a nip or two, for the ticker.
I also enjoy a nice scotch now and then, but only on a holiday. I keep Cognac brandy in the pantry for making coque' au' vin, along with dry and sweet marsala for other dishes. Yes I nip those also when I cook with them.
I could live to a ripe old age and deny all the pleasures of alcohol, unhealthy foods, and end up with Alzheimers too. Quality and moderation of life.
A friend I worked with was stricken with Lewey cell dementia. He was gone by age 58. Never drank or smoked.

That's true...you can do everything in the world 'healthy' and still die early. Of course all things in moderation. Hell, who knows....maybe if I make it to 85 I'll take up cigarettes...what could I lose...lol?! (Kidding)

I'm always wary of the people who brag & push their 'perfect' lives.....like the original guy who pushed jogging as the end-all healthy exercise, died of a heart attack. Vegans will tell you that all the meat eaters are going to suffer & die early. I live next to an Adventist colony and they have a big grocery store called Andy's. Most of the aging Adventists in that store look like they are in misery and have horrible dispositions....no thanks. They will also be happy to tell you, you are going to Hell if you're gay, meat eater, or anything else contrary to what they believe.

I don't know anybody that has it 'all' figured out....including me...lol.

I must be another odd duck here, I enjoy the smell when it's being smoked. Not the smell pre-smoking, and especially not the smell of stale smoke in someone's house (I have 2 friends whose houses smell awful), and not particularly fond of the taste. I do smoke regularly (but very little) to help me sleep, but I almost never do during the day. Just not a good combination for my already laid back personality, two puffs and I turn into a vegetable! I alternate with melatonin on nights I don't want to or can't smoke, and it works well. I could probably be considered an insomniac, and add to that I'm an extremely light sleeper.. Extremely light sleeper... Like someone walking to the bathroom 2 rooms away through a closed door with a fan on WILL wake me up. Without any type of sleep aid I will wake up several times during the night and take hours to fall asleep again. I took melatonin for about a month straight once, and got to the point where it did nothing, and over the counter pharmaceutical sleep aids do absolutely nothing. A few puffs and I'll drift off to sleep and actually sleep through the night. No, I don't believe it's the miracle cure that some people do, but I do see benefits. Like another post above, I find it to be absolutely repulsive that marijuana is classified as a schedule 1 drug, but meets none of the criteria to BE a schedule 1 drug! It's non addictive, impossible to fatally overdose (I've done a bit too much a couple times, and the only side effect was being a bit uncomfortable), and not likely to be abused. I can smoke daily for a period of time, then go weeks without, with no ill effects or withdrawals whatsoever. I do respect others who choose not to use it for any reason, don't like the smell, etc. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. So be it, more for the rest of us! In our county, posession and use of up to an ounce on private property is decriminalized, so I'm in the clear there. In public, all laws still apply.

Give your lungs a break and get the chocolates/caramels. They'll do the same thing, just takes a half hr. Smoke of any kind inhaled into your lungs is not a good thing. Vaporizers are better...eating the best. I can't imagine anyone liking the smell of skunk weed....replusive, especially rolling down the street in a neighborhood with kids.

Absolutely.....

not John. It was aimed at all the media popular do-good-nicks that constantly grind their faux perfect lives into everyone's face. I know some really decent people that have been fortunate/lucky and have good all around lives. But none of them would tell you theirs lives are exemplary/perfect or grind their lifestyle into your face.

We're a country of fads. Time and time again I have seen people get uber popular and rich only to see them crash and burn yrs later because it was a flawed, even dumb/dishonest idea in the first place.

Be glad then

you don't live in Colorado. Growing pot is legal, and at least one college has a cirriculum on farming canabis.

I live in WA, it was one of the first 'legal' states to own and grow. The growers would turn this town into one giant greenhouse for pot if they could. The City Council fought them tooth & nail, but the growers won out in the end. Something about the local banks though....they banded together against having grower accounts, which forced them into a cash & carry business, which means they had the expense of added security.
