is rapidly approaching! I always go to the "Land of Hoover " around the birthday of the Hoover Company. Tom A. has informed me that "The John Long Suite" is ready, (silly, wasn't it)? I'll be visiting Mr. Dick Pike (Wind tunnel fame), Miss Jane, Ed Shenkle (Morrison's Vacuum Shop), and a few others. I'll see what's going on at the old building, too. I'm bringing a few machines for a repair/spa clinic. I believe there are a few treasures there that will be coming to Pittston. I'm also giving Tom a grey 'Z", something he does not have. I'm making home made spaghetti sauce (marinara) banana nut bread, zucchini bread, Irish soda bread, Italian pepper cookies (if I have time to make them), to bring with me. And, I MIGHT even make some of that infamous "Pittston Hospital iced tea".
I'm sure a fun time will be had by all. It's wonderful to return there year after year. Photos for sure!

Well,

THe banana nut bread, zucchini bread, meatballs and spaghetti sauce are all ready. The cleaners are almost all ready for travel, the suitcase is almost ready. I spoke with Tom A. tonight. I'm getting out of school early Fri so I can be on my way.
It'll be great to return to North Canton.

I'm here...

After several storms, I made it back to the house of Hoover where I belong. With me are 719, two 70s, a handivac, and a Z for Tom. I have noticed some wonderful additions to Tom's gallery. Upon entering "my room", I noticed some wonderful Hoover products that will be coming home on Sunday. A fun filled weekend is planned. Tom has all sorts of activities planned. I am sure it will be great fun. Thanks for letting me "bring you along" on the trip.

In regard to Dick Pike, his last project at Hoover was developing the Windtunnel vacuum in the 1990s. It was during this time that he fell quite ill resulting in his retirement. Prior to development, he was in purchasing among other positions. He worked his way through various offices at Hoover. His wife, JoEllen, was an executive secretary. Imagine the pillow talk in that house. Hopefully we will get to see them during my trip.

"Model 70 turning off when the handle reclines" sounds like a torn wire. Easily fixed with another harness, or with a new wire fed through.
Ahh yes, the Hoover Grease Gun. I purchased my tips brand new from Ed, At Morrison's Sweeper Place. It is my understanding that they were his last spare set. I use mine nearly every day...here is mine greasing a model 51 Upper Bearing.

Seeing that abandoned factory was kinda sad. Endemic in America now; so many of our great old companies are gone and the towns the factories supported had to fend for themselves.

All those decades that Electrolux US flourished in CT and then gone like thieves in the night.

That 719 was given to me by a co worker

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
She found it in a church flea market. It was listed at $5.00. At the end of the day, my friend offered $3.00. She brought to an end of the year picnic. It was a mess. NOT anymore! I actually assisted Tom tonight with some of these projects. (He did MOST) of it, really.
The cherished building is a total disaster area at the moment. But, I'm sure it'll be marvelous once it is all completed. It still has that same smell to it. I was a little shocked at the condition of the place. I was given a few bricks from the front of the building where the "Home of Hoover Appliances". was. I'm told the letters are going back upon completion. You'll notice that the "iconic" smokestack was torn down and REBUILT! It's wonderful to see it when you enter the town. Sadly, the factory is no longer there, but.................
To quote Sonny and Cher, "History has turned a page, huh".
Tomorrow will be another fun filled day. I picked up a great little HOOVER refrigerator today at an estate sale. It belonged to aHoover employee who passed away last week. That, a washing machine, and a few other cleaners are returning to PA. I also found an BEAUTIFUL "Celebrity, with all of the accessories. WE were in the "Canton Preservation Society". It was in a corner, next to a vintage Electrolux and a Regina electric broom in orange. Tom was amazed that the Hoover caught my eye from so far away. Silly boy, Tom...
More news tomorrow.
John

Interesting shots of that Hoover site-does the place still have power?Looks like the remains of a power company substation in front of the Hoover smokestack. The site must of had their own HV to MV substation. The VOA Bethany,Ohio transmitter site had a similar substation.

Yes, there IS power

You can see work lights burning all through the place. They HAD made their own power at one time. They just don't generate their own anymore.

Outstanding, John....many thanks!

I sure wished I could find a Euro Constellation with the "diffuser" for the motor brush dust. Taken care of in the reissue Connie, but not in the original US run. Imagining too what that prototype Connie PN must have been like and why it never made production.

The Kinston NC DuPont plant used to generate their own power.Becuase of environmental issues they don't anymore-probably the case with Hoover. The transmitter plant I am at is on the same 115Kv line as DuPont and Weyerhasuer.Probably Hoover sold surplus power to the utility. So that is a substation I see there.Like looking at power substations!

University of Missouri @Columbia sat on its own coal reserves. They generated their own power for the campus....no doubt they sold their surplus to the local power company. I wonder now with coal being so un-PC if they quit that practice.

Real1shep,
I would imagine the Hoover power nozzle idea was probably put on hold due to the disaster with Lewyt as did many companies. Had it not been for that I think everyone would have had a power nozzle much sooner.

I'm very glad to share all of this

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
with you every time I go there. I got home later than planned due to major roadwork on Route 80 East.... added about 45 minutes to the trip.
I opened the door of the house to find a bat flying around inside! I had to lock the two kitties in a safe room, open the front door and some windows, and try to persuade the bat to leave via the front door. I could have done without that last night. I wonder how long he/she was in the house.
At one time, The Hoover Company supplied all of the energy to the YMCA across the street. That Hoover Company was VERY generous...donating land for Hoover High School, The HOOVER Foundation, etc. It really was incredible.

Ahhh yes, as in electrocution! I dug a little deeper and found out that in developing the PN Lewyt made it possible for 115 volts to reach the handle under certain circumstances.

Hoover CO was a legend....no doubt that the town was better for them.

John, bats love to inhabit dead spaces like inside walls and above ceilings....could be just one random bat, but I would expect you have more.

Kevin,
Yes the electrocution issues (actually just mild shocks, no electrocution)
Lewyt was the first canister vacuum to adapt a power nozzle in 1956-7. The first one had a long cord but they tried to improve that in 1958 and had the first of the wire free shockers. Their third power nozzle was no different and the company was bankrupt and sold by 1961 or 62ish. Had they stayed with their first power nozzle all would have been fine and I imagine everyone else would also have a power nozzle by early-mid 60s. But, after the shocking experience of the power nozzle a lot of people were afraid of the power nozzle and probably wouldn't have sold well. Electrolux, Kenmore/Whirlpool, and Compact got lucky and kept their versions of the early power nozzles.

Thanks for that, Phillip. Someone had said in something I was reading that the "improved" model started the shocking problem. I didn't realize the problem had continued and actually caused the co to go bankrupt.

I rented a steam cleaner once in the 70's and standing on the wet floor I got zapped hard holding their PN. I'm sure it was probably a bad ground on a very well used cleaner.

Interesting on the 'first' PN. I was always told Electrolux had the first....maybe that should read the first continuous production PN...lol.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
....possibly up in the very long attic. How might I get them out of there? The roof was completely replaced almost 5 yrs ago.. was a complete tear off, etc. There is a very long attic vent all along the point of the house. I hope I don't have a bat condo going on. There was a bat years a go. Murphy had it in his mouth... still very much alive. He met his demise at the business end of a corn broom. and met his final resting place outside.
I really could do without this.

A good way to see if there are bats (if you don't notice any by looking) is to put a bowl of watermelon in the area you think has a bat. Take note of how much is in it. If there is a noticeable amount gone after a day, or two, odds are there are bats. We do that when we're checking the barns for Bats.

Once in a space, bats are tough to get rid of...short of shooting and broom/net work. Maybe the animal removal people have their ways...dunno.

The big thing is to find their ingress....fix that...then do battle. They are HUGE carriers of rabies....so you really don't want your cats exposed even with shots.

Funny bat story

My ex was in the Peace Corps stationed in Malaysia when she was young. She lived in this hut/cottage thing with roommates. The ceiling inside was sloped down to a peak. Curious about what was causing the peak, one evening while most were smoking pot, someone pushed up HARD on the ceiling with a broom handle. He was immediately rewarded with hundreds of pounds of bat guano raining down upon everyone!

It's probably an unrealized revenue stream in Malaysia.

Bat Whisperer

Well then, John, you should at least keep them until Halloween.  Would make realistic decorations.

There have been no more bats, thank God.
Heather gave me a few bags of fresh tomatoes. I made home made spaghetti sauce with them. The house smells wonderful. Sunday dinner will be tortellini w/ homemade sauce.

Oh yes back then before cleanings staff complained if it was to heavy, when stuff was built to last and work. I have a similar sized and aged machine ( non hoover ) that I use for outside work, like vacuuming the patio and paved areas and cleaning the car

I remember giving a 912 to one of my staff to use one day when S#@o ( swear word to you ) was in for repairs. Oh its to heavy and hard to push and that was on modern low pile carpet.. I said Imagine usuing on on plush carpet like that found in Hotels in the old days
