Hello,
I am wondering what vacuum my mom should get after her shark POS broke. She owns a 2700 Sq Ft. house with high and low pile carpets. Also has hardwood and tile floors. I would prefer something under $400 and that it wont break in a year or two.

Go the used Kirby route. There are plenty of them all over Craigslist used usually for $200 or less. If you want a like new one you can find refubished ones on ebay or it vac shops for about $200-$450.

Miele S7 upright

 I would go Miele S7 upright route. There are many models to be had. All of them clean the same. These start at $399. I have had one now for just over six months, and it is vastly superior of an upright to many things currently on the market.
It is very quiet, has tons of suction both in the nozzle and the hose, on board attachments, decent weight, and rock solid. Having a 2700 sq ft house, this machine has a nice long cord, and works excellently on bare floors and carpet, not something a majority of uprights currently on the market do truly well. Starting with a 7-year warranty, it won't be breaking anytime soon.

I have both a Kirby and the Meile upright-the KIRBY is the better of the two.The Meile canisters are excellent,though.If the home has the mixed flooring the Meile with a powernozzle could be a good choice-or any other quality canister with a powernozzle.Go with a BAGGED machine-will lsat longer,easier to care for.

Keep in mind the Miele is a Heavy machine weighing about the same as a G model Kirby but the Kirby is much easier to push because it is self propelled and the Miele is not.

 

The Kirby's cleaning performance is much better than the Miele.

 

The Kirby can shampoo your carpet, the Miele can not.

 

The Kirby is slightly louder than Miele because it is more powerful which means it will clean much better.

I recommend the Cirrus CR79. You can find one on amazon for $359 and you could also buy an extension hose kit with this just from anywhere like online or at a vacuum store.

vacuum suggestion

 Since you have some carpet, you will want something with a spinning brush. I would suggest a power nozzle canister, these will clean as good as an upright and are much more flexible. Many people suggest having two machines, an upright for carpets and a canister for hard floors, while there is nothing wrong with this, it's not necessary when a power nozzle canister will give you the best of both worlds. Based on what you want to spend, I would suggest the Riccar Prima or Simplicity Wonder, both machines are the same, just different color, made by Tacony. You may end up paying slightly more than what you said you wanted to spend but it will be well worth it.

beware of bagless vacs

 I would avoid anything bagless like the Dyson or Shark, when emptying these, you are going to have a dust cloud in your face and probably end up breathing some of it in. Also, you have to do a lot of work to maintain these machines or the filters will clog very quickly, also the cyclones must be cleaned. If you really want a bagless machine, spend a bit more and get the Sirena which is a water filtration machine, it is slightly more work to maintain than a bagged machine but not nearly as bad as cyclonic bagless vacuums.

A used Aerus? Not too loud, easy to push, and simple to use. Get a used metal bodied Aerus Electrolux or maybe even a Perfect PowerTeam? Bags are easy to find for those two.

Well if she is vacuuming high pile carpet too, I would recommend something like one of the sanitaires, that you can raise and lower depending on carpet pile. I found one on the Walmart website for $115. Its lightweight too at 12 lbs.
