Buying flowers and some wine should do. Or just ask it nicely.

The beginning digits of the serial number betray its year and month of manufacture.

Andrew,

Tom is right, regarding those machines made after mid-1988.

First you must find out if it is so inclined...

Does this formula still apply to new models made recently as well?

I just got one with S/N 2021828217H

Would that be 2021, August 28th?

I thought a brush roll and a belt maybe even a power cord would definitely turn a sanitaire on. I don't think asking its age would help if you want a second date.

I got tired of waiting on this thread so I just eMailed Sanitaire themselves to get the answer I needed.

This is what they told me:

Hi [omitted] ,

Thank you for reaching out to us about your Sanitaire TRADITION Upright Vacuum! I'm glad you have given me the opportunity to assist you.

As I personally checked here using our system, the machine was manufactured on 3rd week of May by the year 2020. However, when it comes to the warranty we usually based it on a copy of the sales receipt.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I'd be happy to help!

Thank you,

[omitted]

So that means that it's in Julian format, with just a 4 digit code. 20 being 2020, and 21 being the number of weeks from the start of that year. 21 weeks from Jan 1 is the 3rd week of May as was stated, so that all matches up. The rest of the serial number seems to be just internal or factory code or they cannot specify it to civilians.
