I recently acquired a second Heritage I model and was surprised it had a shake out bag. Was that an option for that model? Thanks for any insight on Kirby manufacturing and model history. Thanks GK

I believe the Heritage I could have been bought with either shakeout or disposable bag systems.

I've read that the shakeout bag was an option, but why the hell anybody would want one instead of convenient, mess-free disposable filter bags is completely beyond me. The same goes for modern bagless machines.

Edgar,

I had no idea (as a boy) that the shake-out bags even existed on the Heritage/Legend series. That is, until more recently when I at least saw a Heritage II bag with a short zipper... and then I saw mention of that in the instruction books!

I would think these customers ordered theirs with the shake-out bag to avoid the cost of buying disposable bags, or (like KirbystheBest had said) because they had been used to shake-out bags in years past.

As others stated the shakeout was an option

Some people opted for the shake-out from habit, this was what they were used to.  In addition some felt they were saving money (think bagless craze)  Not having to buy disposable bags.

Those used in commercial settings preferred the shake-out.  Still do, many Sanitaire machines still come with shake-out bags, as do some Royals, and Hoovers.

The shake-out bag was an option through the end of the Legend II. That being said, the consumer would likely never know about it. The salesman brought the machine with disposable bags and demoed it. The distributor would have had to order the shake-out bag model separately from the paper bag model, something model distributors didn't do. And why would they? They made money off selling the paper bags.

My distributor did order them and did offer them if requested. Western Illinois University (WIU) ordered their commercial usage machines with shake out, and we were proud to oblige.

Consumers in the home were offered upon request, but we could usually sell the convenience of disposable. I only remember selling a few with shake out for home usage.

Kirby dump bags-keep in mind you will NOT get out ALL of the dust and dirt you pick up.So the disposable bag IS better.
