I was trolling ebay, when I came upon a listing for an Oreck XL Dave Oreck signature edition. The listing said "for repair, wife said she smelled something burning, and just bought a new vacuum." "It had been a good vacuum, I hope someone can repair it, it's very clean."

It was very clean, appeared to be in good condition. I got it for $20, I figured that even if I had to replace the motor, I would still be ahead. Well it arrived and what I originally suspected was true. It needed a belt. I replaced the brush roll because the bearing were a little tight, and the bristles worn. Put on a new belt, works like new.

I have always defended the Oreck as a vacuum that fulfilled a niche in the light weight category. It's not a bad vacuum. I don't ever see it replacing a full grown vacuum in my rotation, but for a total of $36, it's not bad. I have a Riccar RSL4 Supralight, that I am sure would out clean the Oreck, but I paid a lot more for it too.

Oreck

If they sold Orecks for what they are, a very good lightweight quick pick up type of vacuum, they would be fine, but they market it as the best heavy duty deep cleaning upright...Which it is NOT!

The Orecks clean low pile carpet very well and there aren't many light weight upright vacuums at that price point that do. Very easy to maneuver around and go from carpet to bare floor. Since I've had my Oreck XL, its never broken down or required any expensive maintenance, just a belt.
