So I was at my work at Aerus Electrolux today and someone brought in a beat up Lux 3000. Now, he wasn't using machine, a maid was. And this thing was TRASHED. He brought it in to get the duct unclogged, and we took it apart and found the brush was worn to almost nothing. We also saw the pivots were broken because someone had slammed the machine down so many times. Upon further inspection, we found out the motor was a little bit rusty, and the filters were never cleaned or changed, so the motor was running so hot it melted the bag housing. It needed a new bulb and a new bumper and the whole thing was filled with dust due to a leak. The price for all the parts rang it at over $400. The person who owned it bought the exact same model on "Repo Special". They also said they were gonna have a chat with the maid. Did I mention how hard it is to tear up a Lux 3000 this bad?

Working in the vacuum cleaner repair/sales industry for more than three decades, I've seen it ALL. The worst offenders are cleaning ladies, followed by teenagers. Neither bought the vacuum, and neither care about it. I hated mowing grass so much I tore up my father's lawn machine (as a teenager) so I didn't have to cut the yard. Still hate mowing - I make my husband do it. Up to me: I'd pave the front lawn.

I hate mowing, too. I usually wait until the yard looks just this side of abandoned (kinda like it does now) before I do it.
Although I don't abuse my mower or other devices I'm not fond of, I've certainly seen the result of that mentality. The Filter Queen Majestic vacuum cleaner I got last year was a classic example. All of the plastics inside the power nozzle were totally shattered from someone repeatedly slamming the thing into baseboards and other immovable objects. I'm pretty sure that didn't happen from just one (un)lucky hit. And we won't even go into the godawful dog piss stench that infused the entire machine. I had to scrub the dustbin portion out with PineSol and a toilet brush. |

I am the different one-I LIKE mowing-to me its like vacuuming a giant carpet!But---the other yard chores I DON'T like.I especially like mowing with my quiet, clean cordless electric mowers-better than a dirty, noisey, hot gas mower anyday! |

The issue I have with not allowing a housekeeper to use one of my vacuums (which I don't, for the very reasons exemplified in this thread) is that I don't want a substandard (my standards are very high) vacuum used in my house and blowing dirt into the air. I vacuum myself. If I have a housekeeper clean because I've gotten hopelessly behind, s/he doesn't vacuum. I realize, though, that, for most people, a housekeeper who doesn't vacuum would be ridiculous. I can't think of a workable solution; if you give them a Kirby or something equally indestructible, then your house and furniture will take the damage. I suppose that if you don't want to vacuum yourself, then you'll have to accept a compromise either in the quality of the job or the condition of your vacuum after, if not both.
As for mowing grass, if I had a vintage Lawn-Boy like I had growing up, I'd love to mow grass. Anything else, though, forget it; I do pay to have my grass cut cuz I don't have, and can't find, a mower like I want and don't want to use anything else. |
