Kirby compatible safety switches: 505~515 516~Sanitronic VII D50~ClassicIII Heritage~Legend II thereafter, I dunno... too modern to be of interest to me. But I imagine all the G series are the same - |

Kris,
Your problem lies in the fact the Tradition uses the same speed switch as that on the Classic Omega and the Classic III: a single arm instead of two buttons. No front-mount attachment intended for the D50 will work on your Tradition, or vice-versa. Safety switch compatibility: 3C to 515 516 to Sanitronic VII Dual Sanitronic 50 to Classic (1CR) Classic Omega to Tradition Heritage I to Legend II You will need to find a Handi-Butler (Mark IV) intended for use on the D50. It's also true that the very first Traditions built in the summer and fall of 1979 had a speed switch mounted to the inside of the headlight. These accessories will have a pin on them to jibe with one of the two speed switch buttons depending on the position of the pin. ~Ben |

From the Dual-Sanitronic 50 are 2 speed machines, except for the rare occasion of a Super-Sweep, Sani-Sweep, American Lincoln, or ComVac commercial machine, in which there was no way to access 2nd gear, as the cleaning head was non-removable, and this attachments were both useless & unavailable.
The Heritage series had the same speed switch as Seen in reply #7, it should be capable of Deciding slightly to trigger 1st gear speed, then depress more into 2nd gear, used only for Attachments.
You will not be capable of running a D50 Handi-Butler on the Tradition, especially in the extremely rare Event you have a model with the locking head-light cap (produced only for a very limited time during the first line-up of Traditions in 1979). There are ways though, however. You can unscrew the safety switch, and CAREFULLY depress it down with a zip-tie until the cleaner engages into 1st speed, and ONLY first speed, Tying the switch down fully will engage 2nd gear, and using the Handi-Butler in second gear is a big, motor-damaging no-no.remember, second gear is ONLY for attachments!
Rigging a cleaner is even easier on a Heritage, but why not just purchase a genuine Handi-Butler for your model? Esp. If you plan on long uses of the Handi-Butler. I will be honest, I ran a Heritage I for over a year rigged with a Classic III nozzle, and rigged the Classic III to use it's own nozzle this way!

I have bought 3, and they all looked like they had never been used. When they arrived, they all had been stored with the belt stretched out on the belt lifter. This caused the belts to become permanently stretched, and rendered them totally useless. Kirby has discontinued the belts for the Butler, and they are even harder to find than hen's teeth. I have three Kirby dealers in my area, and none of them have any NOS belts. Just a friendly warning from someone who's been there.

The Heritage the switch on the front is just a lever that pushed a rod through the opening at the bottom of the fan case to a slide switch mounted in the motor housing. The first position of the switch was low speed for vacuuming with the nozzle, pushing the switch further would kick it into high speed for the attachments.
