Charles has an orig it's bronze like mine
but it seems the model before Sanitronic 7 or maybe the 562 has a cream colored cord.

Would the handy butler of a Sanitronic 7 work on a dual 50?
I know they seemed to have changed position of the safety switch on base so maybe not?

thanks

The 562 had a white cord with tan plugs. The Sanitronic 7 and D50 had a goldish-tan cord.

The Sanitronic 7 is a single-speed motor, with a single safety switch. The D50 has a two-speed motor and two safety switches, so, no, the Handi-Butler from a S7 would not work on a D50. It will fit onto the motor plant but won't operate because the safety switch will not be depressed.

btw, on the early 562, the plastic bag guards (top and bottom), the handle grip, the headlight trim and rug nozzle bumper were a dark, dark gold - almost brown color. The bag guards and handle grip have a faint sort of metallic appearance to them.

THANKS!

That's really good to know!

so I assume aNY PARTS BEFORE THE D50 won't work

Been some sellers on ebay stating contrary to the fact about the 562...mating to vacs to the 80's

LOL

Kirby compatible safety switches:

505~515

516~Sanitronic VII

D50~ClassicIII

Heritage~Legend II

thereafter, I dunno... too modern to be of interest to me. But I imagine all the G series are the same -

Interesting

That's good to know
Guess, the 562 & Sani7 look tan but won't fit...
Is that the same with the hose? I suppose

No big deal as I have a 3 D50 hoses & one on the way
but the hose on the 562 has a metal collar which is interesting...

Thanks, I've been lucky so far
no major mistakes...LOL

Im sorry I don't mean to contradict

But I think the D50~ClassicIII may be incorrect.
Maybe the D-50 to Classic because they actually used two switches,or a two button swittch. Then starting with the Omega it went to one button two-position switch as the safety speed selector switch. The rug nozzle would push the switch to the first notch, the hose pushed it to the second engaging the high speed. This carried over to the Classic III, and then the Tradition went to one in the light hood for a short time and then back to the Omega style, whereas the attachments for an Omega will fit a Tradition.

After that I am not positive, until the G series where they moved the safety swtich to the side instead of on the attachment bar.

Heritage II

I think the Heritage/Legend series were all like the Heritage II pictured here.

The 2 position safety/speed switch is the black plastic thing on the right.

The carpet head, shampoo head, etc had a pin that would depress the switch ( metal tab at top of switch case) half way for normal speed. The longer pin on the hose would depress it all of the way for high speed.

Well, you may well be right about the Omega and III. I have not seen either of those machines for a long time and it seemed, in my mind, that they had the same safety switch as the Classic & Dual machines.

Feel free to contradict me anytime! I, unlike the Pope, am hardly infallible!

pic d50

on the sanitronic that 2nd metal button is on the top in the middle & not offset to the side as the d 50

How were the single speed motors different?
guess not as good on tools or attach?

the 562 pictured is not original, i have an original 562, they came with the tan close together circles bag, the oval logo didnt come out till the sanitronic VII, even then i think they had the circles on the bag.

Safety Switch

OK. So is the Tradition different on its own? I have a Handi Butler I wanna use on my D50 from the Tradition. It appears to only have a tab on bottom edge but not out to side like the Heritage. It also doesn't look as if it lines up with the D50 tab location. Slightly off center of bottom edge.

2nd? So in reply to the pic of the Legend to or Heritage; Are these 2 speed motors as well then? I do see the safety tab depth differences from the hose v/s the power nozzle. The hose tab is deeper and pushes it all the way in. I hand tested it and it goes on half way as said, then off as I continue then on again as I push all the way in but I can't tell if any faster as noise seems the same.
If the Handi Butler of the Tradition fits can I mod a tab to engage on either the Heritage or my Sanitronic D50? I'd need 2 of course. The to I use the half wy position and not full?

Thankx in advance!!!

Kris,

Your problem lies in the fact the Tradition uses the same speed switch as that on the Classic Omega and the Classic III: a single arm instead of two buttons. No front-mount attachment intended for the D50 will work on your Tradition, or vice-versa.

Safety switch compatibility:
3C to 515
516 to Sanitronic VII
Dual Sanitronic 50 to Classic (1CR)
Classic Omega to Tradition
Heritage I to Legend II

You will need to find a Handi-Butler (Mark IV) intended for use on the D50.

It's also true that the very first Traditions built in the summer and fall of 1979 had a speed switch mounted to the inside of the headlight. These accessories will have a pin on them to jibe with one of the two speed switch buttons depending on the position of the pin.

all Kirbys,

super-sweeper's profile picture

From the Dual-Sanitronic 50  are 2 speed machines, except for the rare occasion of a Super-Sweep, Sani-Sweep, American Lincoln, or ComVac commercial machine, in which there was no way to access 2nd gear, as the cleaning head was non-removable, and this attachments were both useless & unavailable.

The Heritage series had the same speed switch as Seen in reply #7, it should be capable of

Deciding slightly to trigger 1st gear speed, then depress more into 2nd gear, used only for

Attachments.

You will not be capable of running a D50 Handi-Butler on the Tradition, especially in the extremely rare

Event you have a model with the locking head-light cap (produced only for a very limited time during the first line-up of Traditions in 1979). There are ways though, however. You can unscrew the safety switch, and CAREFULLY depress it down with a zip-tie until the cleaner engages into 1st speed, and ONLY first speed,

Tying the switch down fully will engage 2nd gear, and using the Handi-Butler in second gear is a big, motor-damaging no-no.remember, second gear is ONLY for attachments!

Rigging a cleaner is even easier on a Heritage, but why not just purchase a genuine Handi-Butler for your model? Esp. If you plan on long uses of the Handi-Butler. I will be honest, I ran a Heritage I for over a year rigged with a Classic III nozzle, and rigged the Classic III to use it's own nozzle this way!

I had a feeling you would write a reply as I was writing mine!Laughing

You could rig the D50 the same way I talked about above, or use a bent soda can opener the way I did to make my Classic use a Classic Ω Rug-Renovator!  Or play it safe by purchasing the Mark IF Handi-Butler.

Careful buying Handi Butlers off eBay

jfalberti's profile picture

I have bought 3, and they all looked like they had never been used.  When they arrived, they all had been stored with the belt stretched out on the belt lifter.  This caused the belts to become permanently stretched, and rendered them totally useless.  Kirby has discontinued the belts for the Butler, and they are even harder to find than hen's teeth.  I have three Kirby dealers in my area, and none of them have any NOS belts.  Just a friendly warning from someone who's been there.

Joe,

Next time you peruse eBay for a Handi-Butler 1958 or later (Mark II onward), before you purchase the item (whether an auction or Buy It Now), please ask the seller to detach the belt by changing the belt lifter position to "ON" so you don't have this problem of a stretched belt.

Thank you,

Ben

You can run Generation series, knurled Betts in the Handi-Butler, it works AMAZINGLY in my Heritage 84's system, with the Saber-Saw, drill and everything! This Handi-Butler is the same as used on the Tradition. I'm going to see about making replacement belts, I work with rubber nicely!

The Heritage the switch on the front is just a lever that pushed a rod through the opening at the bottom of the fan case to a slide switch mounted in the motor housing. The first position of the switch was low speed for vacuuming with the nozzle, pushing the switch further would kick it into high speed for the attachments.
