Years ago, my Gran told me about a machine that her mother had. It was like a Hoover but non-electric, and used friction drive and gears to drive the suction fan.

Anyway, this evening, there was I leafing through the online 1929 Christmas Edition of "Radio Times" and I happened upon this...!
