Dug out an old project my daughter and I completed a while back. After we finished it, I used it a few times then put it up.....I had almost forgotten about it to be honest......pulled it out tonight, blew the dust off it, will put a new bag in it and take it for a spin!

I sure like the colors on that machine - you two did a fantastic job on it. What exactly does the cleaning selector do? And why did you have to blow the dust off it? Just put on the hose and vacuum it! :o) I had to do that long ago to a Kirby that had a leaky bag - quite embarassing... | ||

I appreciate it! Rob, the cleaning selector is an adjustment you can set that determines how much airflow loss the vacuum experiences as the bag gets full before the door automatically pops open and shuts the motor off. The lower the number, the faster the vacuum will shut off. I have always kept mine at the highest setting (6), but I change bags so often, I've never had one shut off on me!
Kevin, believe it or not, I let my 5 year old daughter pick those colors for the machine....its kind of a funny story how this vacuum came to be anyway....I bought it years ago at a junk store for like $5 as a parts machine (on a side note, I guess even though I was going to scrap it for parts, I actually saved the machine because a few weeks after I bought it, the entire store burnt to the ground, everything in it was destroyed!). It was beat to death, rusty, motor had one foot in the grave, etc. I actually had put it in storage under our deck because it was in such bad shape I wouldn't even bring it in my house. One day my daughter (she was 4 or 5 at the time) came lugging this heavy rusty object out from under the house and said she wanted to "fix it up." So I let her go wild with it! She picked out the colors, even helped me paint it! I bought a rebuilt 1205 motor, knocked a TON of dents out of body, did a LOT of sanding with steel wool (it's far from perfect, but you should have seen it before I started sanding!), and cleaned everything out and sanitized it. It's now a very WILD looking Lux but runs sweet! We have named it "Kerri's Jubilee" in honor of my daughter and her wild ideas!!! | ||

What a wonderful bonding experience for you and your daughter! I hope she treasures it. The next step would be to paint up a PN4/4A to match.
I've also never been the biggest fan of the Golden J/Super J color scheme, which is one reason my Super J stays in the closet. I briefly considered repainting it after I first acquired it but I never could decide what color I would want that would look good with the creme colored plastics. As I think about now, maybe it would look good in Maroon. Maybe someday when I have fewer pressing demands on my time. | ||

I'm going to have to pull the Super J out this afternoon, photograph it and work a little Photoshop magic (simple color substitution) to see how it would look in maroon. The more I think about it, the more I'm warming to the idea of a respray, but it would be this summer at the very earliest before I could even think of tearing it down to do that. I would want to keep things simple, leave the plastics alone and paint only the metal body.

Edgar... I'd sure like to see the mock-up from Photoshop if you don't mind posting it. I have no experience with Photoshop, although I've always had PC's with it taking up space.

Maroon Super J
As requested, here's a mock-up of what a Super-J might look like in maroon. It's a quick and dirty color substitution. I even spilled some virtual paint on the carpet.
I did this by picking up the maroon color from the piece of furniture behind it with the eyedropper tool, then selecting the body of the cleaner with the quick selection tool and dumping the paint into it with the bucket tool. Took about three minutes. Note: no vacuum cleaners were harmed in the creation of this image.

Oh.... heck yeah, I like that maroon mock-up! If I get my Super J motor strong again like it's supposed to be, I might just paint the metal only canister some shade of maroon.

I agree the color on the Photoshop mock-up came out looking a lot like an Olympia but it's definitely redder than the Olympia's chocolate brown. If I were to actually paint mine, I'd go for something even more to the red than the picture, maybe closer to the red on a Washington Redskins jersey. Like I said earlier, I only spent about three minutes--at the most--on it.
