I knew that a tank-model Westinghouse vacuum cleaner had been used on the "I Love Lucy" show, the model called the "Handy Dandy Vacuum Cleaner" in the "Sales Resistance" episode.

Well, today I watched two Lucy episodes back to back on tv, and they both featured an upright Westinghouse, and in both shows Lucy was using it to vacuum in the living room. One of the episodes is where Ricky accidentally gives Lucy a black eye when he throws a book toward her, and then other is where they go out to eat and Lucy can't make up her mind what to choose.

Anyway, in both cases it was the same Westinghouse in the link below -- I could clearly see the distinctive "forked" handle and the light-toned belt access cap. The only difference was that the bag was lighter in color - hard to tell in black and white, but it appeared to be tan or perhaps very light gray. I would guess tan since that's the color of the belt cap. The dark-red bakelite housing, of course, appeared as black.

I knew that she had used a Hoover (a 28, I think?, with a lot of business using the attachments) and a Premier upright, but had never noticed this Westinghouse upright before, even though I have seen both episodes many times.

Westinghouse Vacuums

I remember well, seeing that upright Westinghouse vacuum in a Lucy segment!
I have never used one of those machines. Wish I could come across one or the tank model that she is trying to sell.
Jeff Schoff took me to the Westinghouse Musem in downtown
Mansfield Ohio last summer. No vacuums, did have a slant
front dryer, with the timer that plays "How dry I am" Remember a couple of those from the 50's. Too fun!
It would be great if we could as a club come up with one or
both of those vacuums to donate to the Westinghouse musem in
Manfield. I had a name of the curator but have lost it, maybe
Jeff can remember?

I believe this is the vacuum you are talking about Charles. I got this machine when some friends were down here in February. Charlie and Tania had been to a Vac shop in Tampa and this is one of the machines they brough home and were kind enough to give it to me. It runs great but is missing the belt access cover and the bag. It does have a replacement cord as well I am sure. The plate on the bottom doesn't have a model number but a catalog number that says F-9. Would love to find a bag and cover for this machine as this was the first vacuum that my Mom had.

It Wasn't Actually the Westinghouse Museum

But the Mansfield Memorial Museum, housed in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, does have a LARGE Westinghouse display filling more than one room, and including ELEKTRO, the famous Westinghouse robot, as well as the dryer Norm mentioned. Seems they have more Westinghouse items on display every time I visit. They actually do have one Westinghouse vacuum, a straight suction (I think) upright from the 20's or 30's. The director's name is Scott Schaut.

Thanks Jeff, I knew you would remember! You have a steel trap mine for details. Not me!
Thanks
