~ When I was a little boy nearly every church, office building, airport, lodge building, restaurant, movie theater, etc. etc. etc. had these commercial Hoover vacuum cleaners.
One of my uncles was a pastor at a large church in Richmond, Virginia. One time when we went there when I was nine or ten years old, the custodian was vacuuming the front area of the sanctuary with one of these. I asked him, "Would you mind if I helped you run the sweeper?"
I have one down at my church but don't really get to use it because there's very little carpeting there. I keep it in the short hallway leading to the organ loft -- it's fun to see it standing there when I come up the stairs. :) Something I really like about it is the big, fat, huge cloth bag. It's just so enormous when the motor is running! Mine has a replacement bag. I'd love to find an original bag someday.

I too remember these growing up. My elementary school had one, so every time Mom had a meeting at the school, I would go track down Jim the custodian, who would let me vacuum to my hearts content. |
