How to date a Hoover Guardsman

Well first, I guess you would ask nicely.  That is, of course, if the Guardsman is so inclined.

Hoover's USA cleaner serial numbers have been date coded since 1987 in the first 4 digits. So 0899 in yours translates to August 1999.
