Probably one of the best made vacuums, indestructible, has a cord winder that is probably made for one million cycles, and quiet too. Too bad we can't turn the clock back 35-40 years to purchase one new. I have one and won't part with it.

Great find and agreed one of the most wonder machines of the times. Here's hoping someone finds one (88)at a garage sale
and brings it to the convention in Aug. (hint-reminder).

OK guys - I really have to laugh. The 89, while an excellent vacuum if you have a running one, was not one of the better ones that Electrolux Canada produced. (Dont get me wrong. I love the style and parts)

When the 89 first came out it had a different style of motor to the 88. This gave no end of problems (almost as bad as the model 90's). They were constantly rebuilding and replacing them. Finally, by late 1972 they came up with a totally different design which seems to have worked well as it carried on for the next 10 years. The parade of "New" 89's going back for repairs was phenomenal though. I remember my aunt buying one in early 1972. It was back for repairs so many times that in late 1973 they actually gave her a new AP100 to replace it.

LOL - so there is your trivia on the 89 for today.

Doug

PS - thought I'd include a pic of my set. It includes both the standard hose and the early green and gold power hose, optional trigger handgrips for the standard hose, 16" floor nozzle, PN2, PN3, both cardboard tool kits, Boxes (the smaller one is for machine only, which you could buy and use the parts from an older machine.) I'll also post a picture of my 87 which has the newer parts with it.

The 87 was the stripped down version of the 89 (no cord rel or electronic brain) - Note this is a later machine so the trim under the handle is green, not silver. The last machines even had green trim on the ends as well. This shows the shag rake, dual action floor nozzle and lime green plastic tool kit (I still havnt found the dark green one but there was one) as well as the more common power hose.

It came with the instruction book for the 89 which had a notation that pointed out the differences betweent he machines.

The 87 just looks so amputated and unfinished without the cordwinder.

Here's one for ya, Doug. While I don't have a green pigtail hose for an 87/89 - just the wrap around clipon cord for the green trigger handle - I do have a beige/brownish pink (matches the AP100) saran weave power hose fitted for the 80 series with the V channel bezel for the 80s bumper trim. The pigtail has been removed (or never fitted) from the bezel 'box' but the comnnection is in place under that wide metal collar. Sadly the wand end has no power socket but the hose does carry power all the way to the handle. Also this hose has no suction loss.

What 80 vacuum would this have gone with? Or is it simply an AP hose with a beige 80 pigtail end on it? The colors don't really go with the red/cream 86 or 88.

My AP100 has a completely different hose end with circumferential power blades.

Is that the one you found here at the bible mission thrift?

There is what appears to be a small metal tap on the right side of the body just at the front cover. What is that? I do not believe mine has that.

My 89 has the metal clip at the front cover also. I believe it is to hold the pigtail cord although I don't use it. I just wrap the cord around the hose once and then it is short enough that it doesn't get in the way....and when I have to open the cover to replace the bag I don't have to worry about removing the cord from the clip.

89 Heaven

Ah...this is a wonderful thread to read after just coming home from work. Those are beautiful vacuums you have there. I don't think I've ever seen a real-life early 89 power hose.

I just couldn't resist adding my "80 cents" to this thread. Excuse the "disturbing" presence of newer Electrolux, and forgive the omission of the 86 (this was taken some time ago).

Hi Guys:

Dave - that hose was a replacement standard hose for the 80 series machines made during the AP100 run. This was the time when they stopped making replacement hoses to match the earlier machines and just went with what ever hose was in current production.

Charlie / Gary - the clip on the side of the machine was made to hold the cord in place (the external cord on the std hoses that is) as some didn't have the swivel lock put on the end of the hose (lime green circular thing sitting on top of the hose cord in my 89 pic) to stop it from turning. Without this the hose would wind the cord around itself untill it strained (and usually broke) at the plug.
