Sweet find! The base looks like new which is amazing. It seems like most get beat up and look like a mess but yours is in great shape. Even the underside looks to be in great shape. Have fun with it.

Congrats on your Hoover find. These machines (I call them the "60 series") are built like tanks. They were built from 1953 to 1956 and Hoover made TONS of them. There are plenty out there still working faithfully in homes across the country. Yours seems to have led a well cared for life. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Turn the motor by hand and see if its stuck. You may have blown a rock or some dirt somewhere and it messed something up.

I get in full vac mode & loose my sense of courtesy until the dust clears

Boy it was dirty!!!
I blew clouds of dust out from roller & maybe motor area

yuck

I eant to get that roller out & shine it
try to open hood & wipe

bag is in the tub
its a dvc replacement uses fn g bags
but it works

Good ole mnachine
never would have guessed 50's...more like 60's
but I knew it was old as it has the qaulity you don't see these days

Here she is running with light

cool!

OOOH it was $10

I said I'd take it

LOL

Had to carry it & go home by bus

I carried it so not to gouge wheels

It got the royal treatment
like a big baby!

bet I gave a few people some laughs
not everyday you see a 5' woman carrying a 4 1/2 foot vac down the street

LOL

Post# 37899 , Reply# 14   4/15/2008 at 23:57 (5,825 days old) by lux1521 ()

I guess your collection is really growing! The $10 is a very good deal for a quality Hoover in good condition.

I'd love to know how these machines clean. I have 4 Hoover uprights and the newest one was built in the early 1930s so I have little experience with the later models.

Anyway, it looks like you have a fairly easy restoration project. Have fun with it.

Oh, and don't forget to put a new belt on it if you haven't done so already. An agressive brush roll like your Hoover has combined with a worn belt makes for poor performance.

cleans good as this ole carpet needs a beating

bet it will clean even better w a good belt

That is really nice. I have yet to find a Hoover that old. I don't even have one out of the '60s. You sure are lucky. And I'll bet it weighs a ton too. My $9.00 Electrolux XXX is the only cheap surprise I've had out of a store.

Post# 37925 , Reply# 17   4/16/2008 at 12:22 (5,825 days old) by camelotshadow (Valley Village)
Wasn't looking for a hoover

My eye was on a Royal china 2002 dirt devil steamer cleaner.
This ia a Jewish Thrift store & I donlt ask about vacs or things too much as they want $25 & up for things.

Really didn't want to pay that for the Dirt Devil.
Saw this guy standing next to it
Didn't look all that good you know old & when you opened the zipper it was full of muck.

But I looked at the bottom & it looked bit different
nice alum plate under there
saw the beats as it sweeps but didn't even know that was an really old vac
saw dates of 2003 repair so figured its been maintained

Just the big wheels & metal got me interested

So plugged it in & it sounded sweet...
picked up from the carpet
had all the parts.
so sheepishly wheeled it over trying to act casual about the dirty vac who at this time the bag had fallen off & was a mess so went w parts to the counter

it was closing time & they wanted to go home so she said $10

So I got it $10.83 with tax...

pout the bag in a bag
wrapped the base in a bag & carried it out

LOL

I knew it was something special but never in my wildest dreams thought 50's

I figured 60's

Wasn't even going to go up there
but I missed a bus to trader joes by 30 seconds so decided to take the bus the long way around & just thought

hmmm take a quick peek in the Salvation Army
stopped in this place first

Yep, guess that's karma
walking home taking the bus with a heavy vac

It;s not light but I was happy with my find & figured for $10
I couldn't go too wrong...

LOL

Need a belt

Would like to find a better bag too

but its all clean now
bag is dry & looks ok

Works pretty darn good too!

CA vac serviced by Hollywood Vacs...

Maybe it's cleaned dirt from the rich & famous...

LOL

OOOH they had a Metro steel hand data vac.
w attacs in box

odd thing
USA made NY

Could have also been old but didn't sound all that nice & didn't suck that great

Yeah nice to find a old vac in good shape...
she has some scuffs & scraps but all in all shes solid

Darn I'm bit by the vac bug...

Here she is taking in some CA sun...

No tools

there is a rectangular slot on side of fan case cover
was wondering what that was for
guess its for tool

i have 2 that's not a HOOVER handle grip. The attachments go in the dide, I have those too. I need to get a RED one. Used one in a convent, DON'T ASK. On my list......

Got belt on

quite a stretch for me
but guess thats it

thanks for the part #

I just went to the vac store & told them the size someone told me & that's what I got

prob the belt as they are tight in beginning

looks like old but not as strtched

My handle isn't a hoover?
I wouldn't be surprised as it's prob had new parts.

Cord is a hoover though not sure orig
found a cut near the bottom & luckily I had white elec tape so it looks good

I got the residue or rust off the roller
it's all shiny smooth now
wasn't too hard or bad.

came out nice

runs good
heavier than the kirby d50
Kirby is a lightweught now

LOL

Notice the great design

The brush part screws into the roller so only that has to be replaced not the whole roller.
Man its a nice metal roller!

I figured how to get it out
there are just 2 levers holding it in
No screws
simple

hi /norm doesn't seem to work

switch is not connected
not sure how it is supposed to work or latch

Post# 38036 , Reply# 28   4/17/2008 at 11:00 (5,824 days old) by camelotshadow (Valley Village)
Side port for attachments is open

Wondering if it should have a cover?
wouldn't it loose suction?

I hear about greasing bearings....
can you oil them or should you?
just thinking about good maintenance

Motor sounds ok to me
no strange noises
it works & sounds similar to a utube same model

Will have to check on that height adjustment thing
it appears to not be hooked to anything

www.elkypro.com/hoops2005/vacuum_...

don't see a cover on hesco so maybe its ok?

hoover 3 kirby d50

side by side

Can't decide
love the kirby sound
sounds strong & is stunning
think the agressive roller on the hoover really sets the nap
still they don';t suck like a freshwindtunnel...

height adjustment works
just have to use foot & some effort

that's nice

Post# 38228 , Reply# 32   4/20/2008 at 10:13 (5,821 days old) by rolls_rapide (-)
Spring Loaded flap

Your model is similar to the UK 638 which shares the same basic design as the previous UK 612.

The tools converter slides into the tools port on the side of the cleaner.

With the cleaner in the upright position, press down fully upon the rear chassis of the machine, near the handle. The rear suspension wheels will move closer to the body of the cleaner. Keep the cleaner in this position by maintaining your force. At the same time, fully slide the tools converter into the port (this allows the converter to penetrate the spring-loaded flap, close to the fan). Release your force upon the cleaner body (the spring-loaded wheel suspension will lock the converter in place).

To release the tools converter, apply force to the rear of the cleaner, withdraw converter. The spring-loaded flap will reseal the suction port automatically.

Post# 38241 , Reply# 33   4/20/2008 at 14:01 (5,821 days old) by camelotshadow (Valley Village)
thanks

so there is something inside...anyway I don't have tools for it & don't feel suction at the end so the flap must be closed.

Only 2 heights for the head
was trying to figure if there was a way to adjust roller height etc for wear?

tried loosening screws on brush strips but they just hold it
& loosening them just makes the loose.

Interesting cleaner esp for its day
like the strong construction

Saw a similar mod 62 & someone got it for $10 plus shipping
same color but looked like the base was painted taupe over orig gray. It was also a side load tool so fairly old
orig bag but not in great shape w a orange cord...

might have liked parts but I think I like the kirby better as I can adjust the head for suction.

Old vac does a decent job & in its day was quite the machine

The model 62 is beige with the blue trim. The model 63 is grey/blue with the blue trim. The 62 had a handle grip and used the "Handisac" type W bags no longer available versus the 63 that used the C bags. The 63 also used a shorter handle and no grip but offered a full wrap around bumper. The 62 in the Ebay auction was original save for the cord which is easily changed. The blue original bag is in great shape and VERY hard to find. These machines cleaned very well on all carpet surfaces and used the revolving beater bar to make the grit come out of the bottom pile of the rug unlike the Kirby that only had brushes to do the vibrating. The toe shifter locks the rear wheels up when vacuuming unusaully thick rugs. Mostly the 62/63 was self adjusting to most carpets.

thanks

Arrgh...if there was no shipping I would have got it that is who knows how much the other bidder would have went
Least I got mine & it works pretty good but it sort of lays the naps sideways & the kirby leaves it more upright.

Thought is was nice but I see not being able to get bags as a problem & the bottom bag part inside did look wider than a fng bag. I don't mind the f& g bags as thats what my royal takes. Someone got a nice vac as it was really clean
