Can anyone tell me what they know about the Hoover model 475? What was the previous model number?

I recently obtained one from ebay for a great price and the machine is in excellent condition. The bag I am sure is a replacment but it appears to be a Hoover replacement. This bag looks similar to a model 334 which is why the machine caught my eye in the first place. The cord is a replacement in white and totally does not go, but I can change that very easily as I have a genuine Hoover cord in black. The machine is very shiny, too. It appears to have been very well cared for.

Another picture...

It's not as scratched as the photo makes it appear.

Louis...

You have a 475 Special. This one was rebuilt by the Hoover Company. It should have a month and a year (last two digits) as to when it was refurbished. The 475 was the cheaper comanion to the 825 in 1935-36. It was replaced by the 25. Yours is in outstanding condition. The "specials" were rebuilt models priced lower than the new machines. Hoover abandoned this practice in the early 1950s. They just added cheaper new cleaners to their lineup and that way did not have to rebuild older machines and print different owners manuals and recreate tool sets for the older machines. It was a cost cutting measure. The bag is a genuine replacement made after 1950 but it is nothing like the 334 bag. The opening at the bottom is much larger and the 334 bag only said "Hoover" in large red letters. This was one of the last of the "coffee can" Hoover cleaners. Congrats on this find!

Above the model number which is stamped on the underside of the machine there is this number, 5 40, stamped just like I typed it, then the serial number under that. Hence, May of 1940.

My question is what was the original model? Or, does it remain a 475 when it is rebuilt?

Louis...

It is still a 475 no matter if it is rebuilt or not. It should say that on the tag on the top of the machine. That is so neat that it was built before the war. These were fairly popular at the time. Congrats on the nice find!

Nice Find, Louis!!

The 475 is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful "coffee can" Hoovers. I love the art deco look of it and the black and orange color combination. I have a 475 that was given to me a little over a year ago by Tom Anderson with the same bag and cord as you have on yours, and an original hose and connector. Then last October or November, Charles Lester gave me an original bag for it, which continued the orange and black color scheme. A cherished part of my collection, THANKS AGAIN TOM AND CHARLES!!

Jeff and Tom.....

I have that same bag that you have, Jeff, on yours. Is/was that the original bag? I was told it wasn't but rather a genuine replacment Hoover. I am confused!

However if this is the original bag, I will take it from my 541 machine which is also in excellent condition. I can then use a DVC original replacement black bag on the 541. Or, I can actually make one. The bag fabric resembles a wool blend mens suiting material which is really not that hard to find.

Louis:

The bag on your machine is a later Hoover replacement.

If you look at the pictures Jeff posted, his 475 is shown with 2 different bags. The top right photo shows it with the same replacement bag as yours. The other 3 show it with the original bag, sent to him by Charles Lester.

My 475 also has it's original bag, which can be seen on my site (link as above). The UK 475 bag is identical to the US version, but the UK version uses the older 'The Hoover' font.

I'd like to see a picture of your 541!

I'd say the choice is yours. The genuine Hoover replacement bag you have on it now DOES look nice on it, but if you have the original orange & black one, that will look nice, too. Either way, you have a great looking 475!!

Jeff!

I did it. I swapped the bag last night and put a brand new original Hoover black cord on it! WOW! It looks so mint! I will take new pics of it when I get home!
