My Mother used to have an old Electrolux that lasted forever. I'm in need of a new vacuum and from what I've been able to read the LUX Legacy Cannister is what it's called now days. I would like something made in the US that will last. I called the AERUS store near me and got quote of $1899. They will knock the price down to $1099 since my Mother had one and if I turn in my Kennmore. Is this a good deal? Is the LUX Legacy worth it?

I meant to add that I have two Australian Shepherds so any vacuum I get needs to be an to handle plenty of dog fur. :-)

The $1099 price is a good price, especially considering the very long warranty it comes with. Make them throw in a large pack of bags, and you will have yourself one very good cleaning, long lasting vacuum. The wide power nozzle will clean a lot of the rug at once, and is great with pet hair. You can keep the automatic control set slightly higher than 'normal' since pet hair gives additional surface for fine dust to cling.

Keep in mind that it's possible that Aerus products are made in Mexico. Aerus transferred much of its production to Eureka in 2003 to its El Paso factory. Then, at some point Eureka moved its operations to Mexico which likely included Aerus products. In addition, Aerus closed its Bristol factory in 2016 and transferred its remaining production to Eureka, which is now owned by the Chinese company, Midea.

Here is a news article that states that the Aerus plant in Bristol, VA closed in May 2016:

Vacuum Cleaner Plant Closing, 250 Layoffs
Published 4:48 am, Tuesday, April 26, 2016

The Aerus Electrolux vacuum cleaner plant will shut down by the end of May, leaving 250 people out of work, the company said Thursday.

The company said in a statement that Aerus had signed an agreement with The Eureka Co, a subsidiary of Swedish firm AB Electrolux, to have Eureka's El Paso, Texas, plant take over assembly and some manufacture of Aerus vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, floor shampooers and air-filtration devices now made at the Bristol plant.

Aerus and AB Electrolux are separate corporations.

The production shutdown and move were expected to start immediately and be complete in May. The company will continue support and administration duties at the Bristol, Va. plant.

nonstandard hose

Unless something has changed, the Legacy comes with a nonstandard hose end, it has a good gas pump style grip, but the hose end takes nonstandard attachments and wands, I think there is an adapter that will convert this to a standard end, but I think the power nozzle connector is also nonstandard, so you would never be able to use other universal power nozzles such as those made by Wessel Werk, Sebo, or Lindhaus. If you still want to get the Legacy, I would get an Aerus classic hose, it should fit the legacy and has a standard hose end.

"I would like something made in the US that will last."

Although Aerus/Lux is nice, there are some other brands worth considering. For example, Riccar/Simplicity make very nice vacuums. the Premium models are made in the US.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting the top of the line one. It's only assembled here. I didn't like the filtration on the Legacy Cannister.

Congratulations on getting your Riccar canister. You should post some pics & do a review of how you like it after a while.

You are correct, the body is formed & components assembled at the factory in St James, Missouri. The components are sourced from the manufacturer they source the low & mid line canisters from, KingClean, as well as the Carpet Pro & Fuller Brush canisters. The 4 high end Riccar/Simplicity canisters are originally a Korean design that was made for them by Daewoo, & they bought the design outright & brought production to America. One HUGE advantage these canisters have over their direct competition - Miele, Sebo, Lindhaus & the "other" Electrolux - is the quality of the hose, wand, powerhead & accessories. Much longer hose, lighter wand, & metal brushroll in the powerhead.

Since you have pets & the bags will fill up quickly, I would suggest using these generic bags I found from Crucial Vacuum on Amazon. The quality is the same as the bag that was installed in your vacuum when you bought it. The EnviroCare bags I also have linked to are just as good as the OEM bags too. Since you are picking up lots of pet hair, the filtration of the bags isn't as important because of how often they will be filled & changed, & also since there is the Hepa Filter on the exhaust.

www.amazon.com/Riccar-Simplicity...

However, having experience with both brands, you would have been better off with the Aerus Legacy or a refurbished Electrolux Epic 6500. With all the dog hair in your house & on your furniture & stairs, you would have appreciated the Sidekick handheld powerhead. And while Riccar/Simplicity do offer their own handheld powerhead, it is a generic central vac handheld powerhead sourced from Wessell Werk & some design changes to work with their brand. The Wessell Werk handheld powerhead is good, but due to the small brushroll it tends to get pet hair wrapped around the brushes easily & it is more difficult to get in the brushroll area with scissors to cut it off. The Aerus Sidekick has a more aggressive brushroll, picks up the hair better, & much easier to cut the hair off. As for the filtration issue you were concerned about, that would have been solved by using HEPA Cloth bags, & there is a website that sells them for $1.00 a bag if you buy the 100-pack, & the afterfilter would have been more than sufficient to capture the carbon dust from the motor.

Best of luck with your new vacuum.

Rob

Tom, I think he means he got a TOL Riccar or Simplicity canister. Surely the Aerus dealer would have told him the Platinum canister is made in Slovenia & the rest made in America. I think he explored the Riccar website since the link was there, tracked down a dealer, looked at them & the dealer explained they are "Made in America with globally sourced components".

Congratulations on your purchase

I have the 90th anniversary model and love it.   I am always so amazed how quiet, and powerful it is.

I love my Guardian Platinum. The HEPA bags keep the inside of the machine clean. The HEPA exhaust filter keeps the returning air clean. I just love mine. Here's mine, on the day I got it, being shown next to the 1937 model 30 Electrolux.

Congrats

On your new machine, twinkie51999. I hope you'll post a few photos along with your first impressions.

Tom, nice picture, great to see how Electrolux/Aerus has evolved over the years.

Just curious, about how much do these run today? Just wonder if they've increased/decreased in price since they were first launched several years ago. Have any new features been added other than a quieter PN?

Does anybody know if any new models are being planned?

My best guess for the new models being planned would be when Aerus celebrates it's 100th Anniversary.

Have the Lux Guardian Platinum,too-Really like this vacuum!!!When I got it the machine had a blue paper bag in it.Used the vacuum to clean under some things I haden't done in awhile to test it out.Glad I checked the paper bag after the cleaning session-It had several HOLES in it from the debris I picked up-Fortunately there was a pack of HEPA Filtrete bags in the box.Put one of those in it after vacuuming the Platinums filter with another vacuum. With this machine DO NOT use the paper bags in it-the Guardians motor and suction system is just to strong for them.Use filtrete type bags ONLY!!--AND tried this vacuum with my Volt powernozzle-made a REAL improvement over the stock Lux nozzle. And Its weird to get over how POWERFUL and Quiet the Lux Platinum is-the sound of the air going thru it and any powernozzle connected to it make more noise than the vacuum itself!A winner of a machine.

Hi Twinkie, did you get the optional 12ft hose that apparently is only available with the Platinum?

Tom (Dysonman1) Aerus Gaurdian Platinum

Does your power nozzle turn off when you shut off the machine and stay off or does it turn off then comes back on by itself?

Mine was the very first run of the Lux Guardian Platinum, so my power nozzle runs after I shut off the machine. I put the green bristle brush roller in my Power Nozzle (with the very stiff brushes), so it's not only a great power nozzle for deep cleaning, but it scrubs in Capture very well also when used with the canister OFF. I know the new models don't run the power nozzle with the machine OFF any longer.

Mine is one of the first 500 the proto types I think they call it & the power nozzle will run after the machine is turned off unless you turn it off on the handle. I can't get over how quiet it is also how cool it looks too.
