Well, it has been a while since I've posted a "new vacuum" thread, because it has been a long time since I've bought a new vacuum!! Or should I say, a new vacuum that isn't a Dyson, as I have been picking a fair few of them up for the purpose of cleaning up and selling on for a profit. Don't worry, I still detest them and would never own one for my own cleaning, they are a means of making money only.
Anyway, the purpose of this thread is because today I received a Hoover Portapower which I won on eBay for £5. There were no other bidders, which surprised me, but obviously resulted in a bargain so I'm not complaining.
I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. It arrived well packaged and very clean (for a 31 year old vacuum), with the original hose and extention tube. I believe there should have been another tube and a set of tools, but they were missing unfortunately. I knew that from the listing though, and that's perhaps why there were no other bidders. The tools from the Senior will fit it in the meantime, but in the long term I'm sure I'll be able to find another tube and set of tools, as I don't think they were specific to the Portapower, so any Hoover tools from the 1980s should fit and be the same as the originals.
I've cleaned it up with soapy water, and vacuumed out the cloth bag, which was simply dusty and not in any way disgusting (unlike those that get damp, which are utterly revolting!), and perhaps most importantly, the motor runs like brand new! It is very quiet and smooth, with no bearing noises.
The only issue is the condition of the plastic, which looks nicotine stained, plus has spots of dark red paint or something. They do scrape off so I'll have to be very careful and do that one by one with some sort of scraping instrument, but I'm not sure I can get the colour back to the original white.
Still, for £5 it is a bargain and even if it never looks great, it will certainly be a functional cleaner! There is no such thing as retirement for my vacuums, even my 1940s models are still in occasional use. My motto is if you have it - USE IT.
I will now leave you with the pictures... |

That Portapower is the correct colour and not nicotine stained. It was only the early USA made version that was white. |
