Hi everyone! I came across this online store, VCDiscounter, that is supposedly selling the Eureka The Boss self propelled model 5181. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it or actually purchased it from this store and can confirm its the actual vacuum pictured on their site. I'm tempted to buy it but afraid of getting ripped off haha I'll post the link so you can see.

Thanks!

I've been looking on their site for around a year now. I haven't bought anything yet, but it's fun to look. I'm more interested in their hoover stock, but this is cool too!

Go for it!
NOS is the final frontier.
NIB saves the cleaning hassle and storage issues of our hobby.
I think I have bought from this company. Use a credit card (not debit) and you should be fine.
That Sanitaire 670 is vey nice, I have one that I have converted to use the far superior ST top fill inner bags...giddy up!

It is probably the best plastic Eureka ever made. It is certainly different looking and neat how the attachments are stores

I have purchased vacuums in the past from VCDiscounter.com. They have had that Eureka Self-Propelled and some other vacs from years back, such as Hoover Fold-Away, on their site for years. I don't know if they really had that much inventory and still have some left over, or if the site is not up to date!

But their is customer service is good.

You could call to question it or submit an order and see if it comes back as being shipped or if item is out of stock!

Update

It arrived today Friday the 13th, damaged. I have to do a DOA (damaged on arrival) report, wait for the R/A and they will replace it. It seems like a nice machine, if the right corner of the rug nozzle weren't broken off.

Questions

funnynet1231's profile picture
Hello. 1: Did it come in the original box? 2: Did you get it replaced? 3: What does it sound like? 4: Thank you for posting your experience, I have been very interested in vcdiscounter and I don't know if I want to buy a 17 year old vacuum NIB for almost it's original price.

I remember lusting over Hoovers on that site years ago. It's amazing that they might actually have those models in stock!

Quick question: What type of box did your Eureka come in? Was it the original factory box? If so, could you take a picture for us? I've always found the boxes almost as interesting as the vacuum itself; getting a NOS machine without the box would be a bit of a disappointment. I don't think I could bare to throw it out.

Good luck with the replacement!

"original factory box ?"

I agree that the boxes can be of interest with color pictures, original attachments shown and features explained.
I am moving out of my current vac store building(more on this later & separately)and have MUCH to sell or SCRAP.I have many original boxes from the 90s as well as before and after. Some were kept to hold related parts or bags.On others I removed color panels and used them as backdrop on displays. As I start clearing the attic(I was up there yesterday and there are 5 Hoover floor washers circa 1960,MANY 50s/60s Kirbys & more & MORE)the boxes will be among the first items to go across the street to the cardboard dumpster UNLESS I hear interest among collectors!
Anyone?

Yes

It did come in the original box, totally distroyed. No it has not been replkaced yet, thus far I have contacted them three times with no response.

To this point I would not give their customer service very high ratings.

After commenting on this thread I happened upon this very model being sold used for the princely sum of $8. I met the individual, saw the vac, and politely declined. Not my cuppa this Eureka, nonetheless I hope it all works out for you.

Finally

The replacement arrived yesterday, with the replacement was a call tag for pre-paid shipping to send the damaged machine back to them.

As for the machine.  It is a 22 year old NIB machine.  (I am gathering this by the printed literature in the box dated 1995).  Out of the box the belt must be replaced as it has stretched with age.   The frame that holds the brush roll is very flimsy (this was what was broken on the previous machine).  I would equate the plastic frame to that when you get a model car.  This is the frame that holds the brush roll.  The hood assembly is where the strength of the unit is derived.  IMO very poor design.  You basically have the holder for the brush roll in the rug plate.

Suction is good, not overly noisy.  The power assist is nice.  Cord is short I don't know why manufacturers put such short cords 20ft. on their machines.

I will do more experimentation tonight and report if I have anything else.  I added it to my collection because I didn't have a Eureka, bagged, clean air machine.  A higher priced machine it is not, but it seems like a decent cleaner.

"cord is short"

Any Eureka style with 'Boss' name is the standard model with basic features and black color.Other versions and colors will have more deluxe features including longer cord.
The above Eureka is only one I know of with ONE drive wheel for what is a good self propel system.I have only known of one customer here that had this compared with dozens of non SP Victory styles.(Do you know which self propel upright had a 3 speed selector switch?)

Variable speed & headlight

This is the 5181 AT which is a one speed.  The self-propel is very well behaved.

The 5180 AT has a variable speed motor and a headlight.  It is also listed on the website at $20 more.

So many new late 90's Hoovers. I wonder if they have the old PowerForce too?
