Changed the belt in our Royal metal upright and it now pushes VERY hard when the wife uses it.

The front end seems to "push down" and grab the carpet too much when she is using the vacuum cleaner.

I am at my wits end trying to figure out why it now "dives" into the carpet at the brusher end and makes it very difficult to push forward when operating.

Any ideas why this is happening........the adjustment lever is already at the highest setting it was always at and always pushed very easily.........now it "digs" into the carpet very aggressively and makes it VERY hard to use.

I simply don't know what I could have done to make it now VERY hard to push forward when changing the belt........all I did was change the belt like I have MANY times before.

Now the front end dives into the carpet.........and I have NO IDEA why?

Any ideas on parts that might be needed to correct this or any other info would be appreciated.

Brush roll in backwards? There should be an arrow on the brush roll and rug plate. Also are the endcaps seated all the way? Does the brushroll spin freely by holding the endcaps between your fingers? Just my thoughts. Wrong size belt?

I'll recheck everything again..........I already checked everything but I have not checked if the belt is the correct one.

It sure sounds like brushroll is in backwards. Or maybe the endcaps are set at position 2 which is for compensating for a worn brushroll.

They tend to clamp if the brush is not turning too, but guessing that you would have noticed.

Check all those things

Make sure you are using the belts with the textured side so that it grips the shaft and belt. I agree that you may have installed the brush set in the used position that the bristles are digging to deep into your carpet. also make sure the belt is installed in the right direction.

On Royal metal uprights-they are "self indicating" if you have the belt on wrong-it flips off the motor shaft.Right-stays on the motor shaft and spins the brushroll.

I switched to a tighter Kirby belt and it worked. The regular Royal belt in the Model 1048 I have is not as tight a fit. This all happened when I put in a new belt and this time I used an actual belt for the Royal rather than the Kirby belt I had used before.

One of you mentioned "maybe I had the brush on setting 2". How do I know which setting the hex roller knobs are set at? (I put the roller in with the notched sides facing up.)

Thanks for any info.
