Fascinating information.
Some Irony from the article: The Laun Dry Ette advertisement urged the purchase of a Hoover vacuum as well as a dishwasher, ironer, and the washer. Ironic only in that the Frantz Premier company had been making and selling Premier Electric cleaners (Kirby's design and patent) as well as the Ezee "Grasshopper" non-electric cleaner, at the time of the Laun Dry Ette's advertisement. I have newer believed the fake '100th anniversary' Kirby model "Avalir" to really be the 100th anniversary model - according to this article, Kirby wouldn't meet Scott and Fetzer until 1916, and never had any vacuum cleaner at all produced by them until 1919. I consider 1919 to be "Kirby Vacuum's" 100th anniversary model as far as Scott and Fetzer Company goes. Mr. Kirby seems to have been married three times. No mention of when first wife died, but he had three children with her. Second wife died in Florida, and he remarried less than six months later. As he was in his 70's when he married for the third time - wondering what age the third wife was? The article doesn't mention, she may have been quite young (he was quite wealthy by this time). I thought it was a great article with some awesome facts. |
