a different type of carbon brushes than the ones in my other two vacuums that is causing the smell? |

If the carbon brushes are brand new, they could still be seating themselves, wearing in to match the contour of the commutator. That could be producing the smell until the brushes finish seating and are no longer throwing off excessive amounts of carbon. Ideally, a technician should have seated them manually at the time of installation.
