So to finally end the debate and clear the confusion, does the newest TriStar CS, model A101S, have a brushless motor or not. There are multiple contradicting posts about what motor it uses and whether it is in fact brushless or not. Some have said it is a dual stage by Johnson Electric and others, even owners, have swore it is brushless. I have watched videos on YouTube and it does not seem to me from the sound that this is in fact a brush less motor. Thoughts?

I think

Made a post about this awhile ago. But anyways as the owner of the current model I can tell you that it is a regular single stage brushed motor like the ones found in the new aerus vacs. I don't know how anyone could confuse it for a brushless or two stage.

I heard a vacuum shop owner say one time Tri-Star and Aerus were going brushless but I have yet to see that.

ps. criswan I LOVE your pic! Pugs are so precious and there's nothing in this world cuter than a new Pug puppy. We have 5 spoiled Pugs at our home ages 4 years to 11 years old

We actually have 8 pugs, all special needs, who were rescued. Lol. Obama, Garfield, Fillmore, Grover, Quincy, Woodrow, Herbie, and Teddy. See the naming scheme? ;-) It makes for an interesting house full of canine clowns. Lol! We do A LOT of vacuuming, especially the week after baths and the first warm week of spring.

Hence why I am looking into a CS. We have a three story house and I abhor carrying the Filter Queen and the Avalir that we have up and down stairs. I checked with our local vac shop and he swore to me that the CS had a two stage motor built by Johnson Electric in China. I came here to check before looking into anything further and found contradicting information with some saying it was brushless ala Rainbow and Dyson handhelds and others saying it was two stage or single stage. I even looked at eBay and found listings listing the features as a brushless motor!!! Lol. I think I might still pull the trigger on the deal that I found as it was a dealer demo and has a little bit of a warranty with it but at least I know more about what I am buying now.

Andrew, if I was you, I would NOT pull the trigger & get the deal on the demo TriStar. The CS model does indeed use a Johnson (JEI) single stage motor, & it is a very wimpy motor, pulls only 87" Waterlift. In comparison, Chinese made vacs with single stage motors, depending on the brand, pull between 80 to 90" Waterlift, & most German brands pull 100" Waterlift & over. Rather poor for a vacuum with a pricetag of $3G & over!! Also, if you buy the MG1, MG2, MG3 or CS models, you cannot use the HEPA Dome on the motor if you use the paper bags, the motor filter is a entirely different design to accomodate a different motor.

What I would do is buy a TriStar CXL, or if you absolutely must have the plastic direct-connect wands, buy the EXL. The EXL was the last TriStar to use a double stage motor, which was sourced from the former Electrolux motor manufacturer, Electro Motor. The CXL & EXL models have 90" Waterlift, & can easily be upgraded with more powerful motors. I would not worry about having a warranty, they are such simple machines, just a motor, switch, cord & pn receptacle, not really much to fail on them that can't be fixed for dirt cheap.

If you do buy a used one, upgrade the brushroll on the EXL to the Aerus 10 degree brushroll. You will notice a immediate improvement in it's grooming abilities. Also, no matter which model you buy, don't use the TriStar paper bags as they are single ply & clog too quickly. Buy & use a generic Kenmore 5055 HEPA Cloth bag, remove the cardboard bag collar & they fit & work much better. A Numatic Henry HEPA Cloth bag can also be made to work, but they are considerably more expensive.

Also note that if you do decide to buy the demo CS your dealer has, the motor mount for the EXL is still available. I would pick that up & store on hand to have in the future should the motor die & you decide to upgrade to a double stage motor.

Rob you actually read my mind. I was actually planning on swapping out the motor if it wasn't something innovative. I had a CXL at my old place for use in the basement and laundry area and donated it to a needy family after a house fire, so I'm familiar with most of the models from the CXL on just not the specs in particular. I haven't had much experience with newer TriStars but for the home theater and gym downstairs, I really just need something that will handle low pile carpet and laminate. No pet hair or anything, just dust and occasional debris... I like the setup of the TriStar and have a sentimental attachment to them as it is what I grew up with at my grandparents house.

In your opinion is the motor currently used in the CS better or worse than the motor in the Lux 9000? I did a motor replacement for a friend on a burnt out one and the build quality was decent but I honestly didn't know much about the motors at the time other than taking the old one out and putting the new one in. The dealer also has an A101R and and an MG2, the R has the same warranty he is offering with the S, but the MG2 only has a 6 month warranty on motor only. All three are within $100 of each other. He is clearing out his stock as he is becoming a full blown Aerus dealer.
