Ok guys, jump in please?? Brother brought me his used Pretty Pottery Barn 100% wool carpet, was rolled up in storage 2 year, 2 years before that under formal dining room table, prior to that Estate sale, so we don't know how old it is or where it was then. It looked fine when he brought it here, soft too! But no furniture, I cleaned it first. he had shampooed it in the driveway 4 years ago, spinscrub, same machine I have. I now have both of them. I cleaned it 4 times, rinsed twice, still not coming up clean in the water tank. But I am concerned about wear/ shedding? I vacuumed 2 times with the Kirby Diamond, just for giggles went over with the dyson v6, lots of dust and crud still, this was prior to the shampooing . But even after I am getting a lot with it, but I think its carpet fiber. Kirby does have a gentle speed, I also have the Royal 8100?? It has the brush stiffeners 7 amp? Or I have the Elux Silverado, that brushroll is not aggressive at all. Dysons seem to get too much fluff up. I would love to vacuum it every day but love how it looks and don't want it bald in a year. Kitty gone now, so its just me. What would you all do??? I hope you like the look, not sure the cell phone pic does justice. Advise please! Thanks, David.

Forgot, I am wondering if its still shedding due to not much cleaning or its old and fibers weak?

Wool? Welcome to my world!

It actually looks fine to me. If its a wool rug it shouldn't be having much beater action on it though. It will eventually go fuzzy and bare unless the bristles are soft and delicate. If any part of it can be beaten it will be the backing of it!

Have a look at this video online. I've seen it before and its pretty good.

I learned that with my Rust colored one from mid 80s, daily upright, it was bald in the middle in ten years, still in the garage! I could not toss it out. I forgot about the Miele in the garage, darn short hose gives me fits. The fake oriental carpet went to the bedroom, Olelin maybe, not the same feel.

Wool is

very durable. I love wool area rugs, but I'm allergic to wool. My folks had some, and I cleaned them for them with capture dry carpet cleaner, and they looked brand new. They were not heavily soiled.
I've had my premium Egyptian acrylic rugs since 2005, and they have worn very well. Two dogs laying on them also. I clean them with capture, and stains with Resolve.

I dug out the Miele Titan, that 217 powerhead I can't imagine beating things too much! I tried my dc 18 slim, always felt it was not a deep cleaner, but handy! Few minutes the bottom of the bin was covered with carpet fuzz, the whole bottom. That one is out of the running.

The 217 on the Titan ended up with a good amount in the new bag too! Very short fibers, broken off?? Old age? Dirty and walked on so long ago? IS this going to need straight suction only from now on? I can turn it off on the 217 Miele anyway. Of course I have the standard head for the Lux too. More input here the better folks, rather not finish the rug off in no time. I can see its not going to be daily cleaning. Twice a week??

Your grey

rug looks like the ones my folks had, but theirs were blue. They had a Simplicity upright. It never hurt the rugs.

by plastic,

do you mean nylon? Cheap rugs made by Milliken Mills are nylon. At least American made though.

I think Olefin

is a type of acrylic.

Update on the carpet, 2 more rinses, still not clean, but I am stopping. Thinking the Kirby weekly , suction only! Talked to brother, it is 6 years old, but the first 2 years was in the living room of the small ranch house they had, lots of dirt outside!! and 2 small dogs. He cleaned it before it went in the dining room, that was not used. Must not have cleaned it well. So its not old age making it shed so much, just not happy with brush roll I guess?? They of course could have weakened it by walking all over it with it having dirt and grit at the ranch house. He has a Hoover Elite, but not sure how often it was ran, he is not ocd on that crap like me.

As you can see from the video. That is the proper way to clean a natural fiber rug. Other means can cause more damage than good. There are special chemicals added to release soil. Minimize color bleed. Minimize shrinkage. Uneven wetting can cause the carpet to ripple or buckle.

The G series Kirby's do have agitator/brush roll available for delicate carpets available. Worth checking into. Natural fiber rugs don't respond well to aggressive brushing often. A good brushing/grooming are important to keep the nap from matting. However over doing it causes damage. All natural fiber carpets will shed from age, usage and cleaning. The fibers are not heat set like man made carpet fibers.

Be careful of the agitator in any vacuum you use to for daily maintenance. Most of todays standard agitators are designed for the thick dense plush carpets of today.

If you remember the shag carpets of the 60's and early 70's when it was all the rage. You could fill a vacuum bag fast with the amount of fuss that was released from the carpet. It was recommended to use a straight suction tool to vacuum those then rake the pile to restore it.

Here is link to the Delicate brush roll/agitator for the Kirby.

Brush-roll installed, spa day for Diamond too! Gentle speed, soft brush, I think I am ok. Sounds very different with the other brush roll

Your welcome. Hope it works well for you. The high air flow of the Kirby will help keep that area carpet clean. The gentle brushing action will give just enough aggitation to move the nap to facilitate a good cleaning with out causing undo wear.
