Vacuum Hose Repair?

Checkrate/Likes Hi, I came across this: Q: I've had a Kenmore 3.9 hp canister vacuum for years, which is still in excellent condition, because I'm a bachelor and it doesn't get used much. But there is a growing 1-inch tear at the base of the plastic hose. The hose gets stressed especially at the base when I use the machine. What can I use to patch the rip? A: Ok I agree duct tape would work fine, if this was my project i would try Ace Hardware or Home Depot for shrink tubing (just slightly larger than the hose) this would allow it to slide over. Detach your hose slide a 4 inch piece of s-tubing centered over the split then use the heat from a hair dryer to shrink the tubing. This will be flexible and long lasting, good luck my fellow makeshifter. Your thoughts?

Checkrate/Likes *Sears* may still have replacement powermate hoses in stock in the stores.

Checkrate/Likes Duct tape is one of the worst tapes ever made. Does not stick well, ages badly. Gaffer's tape is much better. Cloth tape, easy to tear, sticks better, and removes easily. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find in stores. Checkrate/Likes Nobody really brings this up, other than the long, nefarious process to restore Lux hoses with plastic dip, but....I've found some commercial PVC clear shrink tubing that comes all the way up to 2" dia. About $22 for a ten ft length. I have three hoses I've kept that this would be a perfect 'test' for. My idea is to go past the two end pieces. Shrink it and then razor cut off the excess....easier than trying to figure out how far the material will 'retreat' when shrunk. The stuff shrinks two to one. My Lux ends may be bigger than 2"..in which case I would take them off and shrink as far as I could and still get the ends back on. It may be a bust, but I'm going to try. I'll be trying this in the near future, but it's not high on 'the list'. Usually I just go with modern hoses. But like everything else, new hoses are coming from China & Asia of very dubious quality. Recently paid $65 for one and the end was too tight to fit the attachments and then the chrome flaked off! Garbage.... Kevin This post was last edited 08/16/2016 at 16:16
