I discovered - and fell in love with - Phyllis Diller when I was in high school. I had a half-dozen or so of her LPs, live comedy shows on Verve Records. No matter how many times I played them I would roll on the floor laughing.

I wrote her a note in 2008 and got a very nice handwritten card from her in return.

She and I had a mutual friend: Stan Kann, the famous (infamous?!) vacuum cleaner collector.

I always wanted to meet her but never did get a chance to.

I also have recordings, etc. My favorite movie of hers is "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number"? The movies is silly, but SHE is wonderful.

From one of her routines:\ 'I asked FANG to fix the mixer. He took it apart and a large cockroach fell out. Here's your problem...the engineer died".

"I once had a grease fire....in the kitchen sink. I've seen bugs slide to to their deaths in there."

OMG, I always thought she was hysterical too! She also once said, "I'm such a terrible cook that my husband Fang bought me a new oven, it flushes! HA, HA HA!!" Tg

I'm more of a Rodney Dangerfield man myself. My friend's son worked for him for many years. I actually passed a couple of my jokes to him via his son, which he liked very much. Particularly the one about the man who entered a three legged race by himself, and at the end thereof he poll vaulted over the finish line!

She was always funny

In a self-deprecating way.

I remember her in one of my favorite movies, "Did You Hear The One About the Traveling Saleslady?"

Of course her many TV appearances, she was an absolute hoot on Johnny Carson everytime she was on.

She got a gold plated Kirby. There was a picture of her with the machine at the Kirby dealer in Van Nuys, Ca. Check her out pushing a Kirby on the opening of The Pruitts of Southhampton.

Mom used to sell jokes to her

Phyllis had housewives send her jokes (aka "GAGs) that she would buy. My Mom was among them.
Still have the documents, cancelled checks etc.
Mom had a great sense of humor. Paid off!

Stan Kann told me all about Phillis and the gold plated Kirby. She had been his neighbor and is actually the person who talked Johnny Carson into having him on his show in 1968. She sent the gold plated Kirby to him for Christmas (which in and of itself is hilarious since Stan was Jewish), and had it wrapped in shiny paper. He knew exactly what it was as soon as he saw it, even wrapped up.

Well it could have been for Hanuka. It was still thoughtful, and I am sure he appreciated it.
