Bought my third Royal today at another estate sale....this time a Model 996 (7amp USA motor with oiler). Learning a lot now that I have an 880, 996 and a 2028. Been playing with headlight bulbs and thought I'd share what I learned and an LED replacement.

Headlight bulbs: Drop-in Chinese made motor models.
AFAIK all drop-in motor models such as 2025/2028 etc use a #94 12.8v bulb with two contacts and bayonet base (Royal part number 1-725629-000). This bulb looks almost identical to the 120VAC bulb used in the earlier Royal uprights. It can even be inserted into the socket, but don't do it! It will last about a millisecond until the filaments blow out so be sure not to make the mistake of using it in the earlier Royals. Believe me I know!

Headlight bulbs: USA Motors with brush access covers and oilers.
Original bulb was Royal part number 1-880629-000. I believe the original Royal part number was a 10watt version of the T7 incandescent bulb with two contacts and bayonet base. I couldn't find any 10 watt versions, but 15 watt and 25 watt T7 bayonet base bulbs are readily available. Not sure if it's wise to use a 25watt bulb?

As an alternative I found a Westinghouse LED replacement (p/n 05120) available online for around $8. I ordered two earlier today so it will be a week or so before I can comment on my experiences, but they should have a longer life, be vibration resistant, and draw only 1.5 watts for 15watts of equivalent light.

update

Sorry I don't have edit privileges. Just wanted to make clear the Westinghouse LED replacement 05120 is for the 120vac bulbs used in the older Royal uprights. Also I need to check my glasses because the Royal I bought today at the estate sale is a model 994 not 996.

This lamp probably could be used in sewing machines, too!
