Is it true that when rust develops around the fan shaft, as can be seen on my Classic III, would that be a sign that time is running out for this metal fan?

Thank you in advance with any solution you may have...

~Ben

What condition are the trailing edges of the fan in-the parts covered by the fancase-any bent or nicked blades?

Rex,

Some of the fins are showing signs of wear... and yes there are some nicks on the fan.

It is NOT time to replace the fan, just because there's rust on the belt drive shaft. Look at the inside of steel wands for canisters, they rust from the humidity in the air. Seventy year old Kirbys with their original fans (plus rust on the belt drive shaft) are still being used to clean with today. The only real reason to replace the Kirby fan is for an unbalanced situation due to a broken blade.

Go along with the above Dysonman1 statement-if the vacuum runs smooth and quietly, and has good "spindown" without any squeaks, rattles or other noise-the machine is fine and you can leave it alone.Minor nicks or bends on the blades should not affect the performance.
