I am happy to inform everyone that I got an Avalir from a thrift store for $250!
It is my biggest find yet! I am so happy! There were two G5s there too but I only had enough for one. So I picked the Avalir. I still can't believe that I found it. All it needed was a new hepa bag and belt.
It runs great and I love it.

A great find for you.

I'm still amazed to see them in thrift shops. It was suggested that they might end up there due to inability to pay for them. (I know they are costly).
I just saw an anniversary one in a thrift shop for a wholloping $28.00)

Thank you

This is a 100th Anniversary Edition
It performs really well, and it has the smoothest transmission I have ever felt in a kirby.

One of my neighbours has just upgraded from a Sentria to an Avalir. Something I thought was a rather pointless move for a none-collector/enthusiast.

I agree with you Chris. There are no functional/mechanical differences between a late model Sentria and Avalir. The only major difference is with the Shampoo System which has had considerable improvements made to it. The good news is that the new shampoo system is downward compatible and will work on any Kirby G5 and up.

Sometimes on ebay you can find an almost new or NIB from a pawn shop. You can tell its a pawn shop by looking at the other items they sell. Probably people bought these on some kind of terms as it is easy to get approved for things like this. Maybe they in turn get desperate for cash and pawn it... Just my thoughts.

I bought a NIB Filterqueen this way on ebay and I know it was never used.

To be honest Stan, I think all the G Series are pretty much the same in terms of performance, the refinements over the years have all been to the tech drive and tools.
I do wonder how far Kirby can go with this design - I honestly thought the Sentria was the peak.

My grandma has one and she loves it. I hope they can make it less heavy and also make much easer to use the tools.

It is what it is.

For better or worse, what makes a Kirby heavy is also what makes it good. To make it lighter would require making it more plastic, more flimsy and thus less KIRBY.

I disagree. The Heritage 2 and Legend 2 had a good balance between size, weight and sturdiness. Some of the older models like the DS80 were lovely and light too.

The G3 onwards is made heavier by the TechDrive. Bit of a catch 22, if it didn't have TechDrive, it would've need TechDrive.

Well Chris, there has actually been 2 modifications to the Mini emptor to significantly  increase airflow between the G3 and late Sentria I models. There have also been 2 redesigns to the brushroll from G3 to Sentria as well.

I will however, agree with you that Kirby seems to have hit a brick wall with coming up with a completely new design that performs as well or better than the current G series Kirby's.  I have seen patent drawings of a completely new Kirby that allows use of the hose and attachments without having to remove the floor nozzle which seemed to be permanently attached to the power plant / motor assembly. Not sure how the shampoo system would work with this design. Rumor has it that several working prototypes of this design have been manufactured but not put into production because the performance is less than that of the current G series machines. This shows that Kirby is trying to come up with a new design that performs at least as well as the current Avalir.

Chris I disagree here also. I own a Heritage II Legend and a G3 and Sentria as well. I also have a bad back. Even though the H2 is lighter and rolls very easy when turned off, it does offer quite a bit of resistance due to suction of the nozzle to the carpet when turned on and lowered to the proper height for my carpet. It does hurt my back after vacuuming for just a couple of minutes . Although my G3 and Sentria weigh 8 lbs. more than my H2, I can vacuum my whole home with the G3 and have almost no back pain afterward. The G3 glides almost effortlessly over the carpet because the Tech Drive is overcoming the resistance caused by the suction seal of the nozzle to the carpet. I know this because when I turn the power off without raising the floor nozzle, the H2 and G3 roll so much easier.
