Ok I cleaned up another vacuum this evening. I got this one at a vacuum store (it was a trade in) while I visited St. Louis recently.

This thing was absolutely filthy. I think the previous owner was a hair dresser because the power nozzle was packed with human hair clippings. EEW!

Look how long the hose is! The canister is so heavy to pull around, this hose makes it much more easier to manage.

The filtration system is not TOO bad. I was surprised to see it uses a cloth bag with paper bag combination.

Here's a peak inside. There was no dust leakage from the bag (unless someone had already cleaned the inside out...)

I'm glad the power nozzle on this is the same as those found on Kenmore vacuums. I hated the Filter Queen made power nozzles that came with the older Royal canisters...

Post# 35929 , Reply# 9   3/26/2008 at 21:09 (5,846 days old) by lux1521 ()

Just when I had thought I had lost interest in Royal canisters, then this shows up. That thing is totaly cool. I never knew they had beater bars on those PNs. It looks like a good performer but I think the later filter queen PNs look a bit better.

Is that speed control in front of the switch? I never knew they had that.

I guess the big question is: Did all the cool features come on the blue version? I like blue!

Logan that is a beautiful vacuum. I use to have the blue model, which I believe was earlier than yours. It went to live with a friend in Tucson. They have fantastic suction.

Post# 35935 , Reply# 11   3/26/2008 at 21:25 (5,846 days old) by logan ()

Yes that's a speed control switch on the vacuum. As far as the options on the older blue model, I'm not sure. The one thing I do know is that some of the blue models had the speed control on the hose handle. I think that is cool, wish mine had that. Mine only has an on/off switch on the handle.

Do you really like the Filter Queen made power nozzle better than the Kenmore style power nozzle? When I referred to the Filter Queen power nozzle above, I was talking about the ones that came with the Triple Crown which were huge and like pushing a shoe box around. I wasn't referring to the newer style like on the 360.

Ooh...

That's fabulous! Love the color!

I've always had my eyes open for one of those... they seem like they'd be great vacuums! I know they're built like tanks!

Congrats!

The filter queen nozzle is like the one in the link. When I look at the baseplate I can see how they might be problematic in terms of edge cleaning, but they look cool when cleaned up nice.

Yeah that's the Filter Queen style power nozzle I was talking about. I really don't like them, but we all have our own opinions. :-)

I wonder if Royal still makes these vacuums. The date that was stamped on mine was 06/06/01. I was surprised, I figured it was older than that.

The design is dead. Too bad really. They were quite good.

Back to the Filter Queen PN. I'm sure they don't perform as well, I just think they are better to look at and fit in better with the Royal's appearance.

That was the LAST of the Royal canisters to have the PN. They continued to make a grey one for a while but with no PN. It might have had a plug for one but I don't think so. That didn't go over well because who would want to pay that much for a canister and not have the PN so it died altogether.
So if any of you have that Royal (burgany colored) it is a keeper since it was the last.
I have the blue one and it still looks like new. I agree that the filter queen PN is not as good but I also agree that it looks pretty groovy. What do you all think of the new filter queen PN. I have one and I like it but I don't know if I love it.

Royal "PowerTanks" in my opinion are one of the strongest machines in terms of suction. They were also very well-built and for the money I think they were a better deal than an Electrolux (sorry-as much as I love Luxes) was, especially the newer luxes. Royal retained their old-world quality a lot longer than Electrolux.

The only problem I have experienced with the Royal tanks, particularly the sky-blue model (which I can't recall the model number)is that the armatures had a tendency to go bad on them. I have one machine that needs a new motor-yet it's in near mint color. Green and blue light can be seen when you look into the back and you can smell metal. I do recall another vac club member telling me that the holes in the bottom of the tank did not allow enough air to flow through and that was perhaps one of the causes. He also advised me to cut a circle of chicken wire and place that over the larger holes first and then add the filter pad on top. This may help to increase air flow and to allow the motor to run cooler.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Anyone agree or disagree?

Louis

Is that blue power nozzle in the ebay link above the one that would go with my blue Royal pot canister?

The local Miele dealer was a Royal dealer a while back and I can remember being told something about the motor issues. They know what they are talking about so I'd belive it.

Royals.

In my area Royals are rare. My mother has an Electro Hygiene (Royal Upright) that is 26? years old and still great. I hate the process of putting the belt on the shaft, but it's a darn good vacuum. I saw a blue canister once in a vacuum store. They look fantastic, but seem so rare. How do they compare with Electroluxes of the same vintage in terms of quality and performance (Electrolux seemed to be king of the canisters)? How many inches can a Royal canister pull?

Awesome looking vacuum,
Dave

Logan, WOW what a great Royal canister!

Love that color....The power nozzle looks like a good performer....but that hose is really nice....how long is it?

One of my biggest pet peeves are canisters, with short hoses, nipping at your heels while you vacuum! LOL

I just measured the hose and it's 10 foot. :-)

I have a Royal tank just like the one pictured-and a couple others.Truely GREAT machines-about the most powerful canister out there-but a disadvantge of these machines-their jet engine like exhaust!it can blow stuff around in the room-or dust that you haven't picked up.and YOU MUST use the yellow multilayer bags in these machines--the single layer bags the powerful suction of these vacs pulls the dust RIGHT THROUGH the bag!But these vacuums are FAR BETTER than the "Frozen Turkey" plastic canisters made by TTI Royal today. One vac shop I bought one of these machines from says the motor is the same as used in some central vacs. Now if an exhaust-diffuser can be made for these-than PERFECT!Another person I knew of used one the these in her home cleaning service.Long Live the ROYAL TORPEDO vacuum!

The tank seems overwhelmed by the tools, but I like that little thing a lot. I bet it would clean anything.

Tolivac:

I hear you on the jet engine like exhaust. I have a Metropolitan Professional compact series, and it too has the jet engine exhaust. It's lightweight and very portable, and its all metal construction is a bonus as compared to the plastic crap that everyone uses today. But, as you say, if it's pointed at the coffee table, anything that's on top gets blown off.

Jet Engine Exhaust

It's fun to point the vacuum at kittys to see their reaction! ;-)

I would think the jet blast from the Royal would send the cat airborne! As I pointed out its too bad Royal discontinued these machines and they didn't make an exhaust "diffuser for them.the exhaust is the blower port-you can put the hose on it and have the ULTIMATE dry filtered air blower-better than an air compressor for blowing things. One vac dealer I knew of used the Royal "Torpedo" as a blower to dry Electrolux fans and fan housings after washing them.Spent many afternoons helping him.
