Do the new Hoover type S Hepa bags, for the new Constellations, also fit an older Hoover Portable suitcase style vac, that normally takes the type J bags?

I have an older 1970s Portable that im trying to re-furbish, and dont want to use any bags that leak dirt or dust in it.
If the type S bags wont fit, what can i do to keep the machine from spewing dust and dirt so badly? Seems like the regular type J bags just dont work well.
I have put a new little exhaust filter in the machine, so, that helps somewhat, but was just wondering what else can be done. Thank you!

I would use some of those new bags for a Constellation. They are made by 3M I think. They are very heavy "cloth" like material. The only thing you will have to do is modify the bag collar to fit it to the machine. There are other choices too. It seems that Hoover bags are all very similar except for the way that they are cut or stapled. Bag collars are very easy to alter, you just need scissors! You should have very good filtration with this set up. Check your foam "doughnut" gasket that is on the machine. Maybe you could uprgrade that part too with some foam insulation tape or make a new one out of some foam rubber? Be creative and see what you come up with. After all, you can't make it worse than it is right now. And then you will have a really great canister.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you so much Tom,,i did just as you suggested, new bag, new filters and all, and it works great! This Portable is an E-Bay find, it is complete, but was extremely dirty. So,its been quite a challenge cleaning it all up. Looks alot better now, and the motor sounds perfect.
It seems very clunky to use and cannot imagine having to drag it around a large house, but the suitcase design is just so cool, and the suction is excellent. Sure is a fun machine. Thanks again for your help!
