Hi all, hope everyone is safe with this stormy and sometimes dangerous weather.

I found a way to "clean up" the aluminum on older vacuums. I hesitated to introduce this as I am no expert and I may alarm die-hard Kirby fans who may find this terrible.

I got the idea the other day online about cleaning vehicle windows, safely stripping any foreign material of the glass without scratching it. It worked by using 0000 steel wool.

I began to work on a very oxidized kirby a week ago and tried the wool before polishing....it actually semi-polished the aluminum and most certainly stripped a lot of matter off the metal. Of course the next step is to use Mother's Polish.

Let me know your thoughts.

Not my image, I have no affiliations with the manufacturer.

I believe ultra fine steel wool is indeed the prescribed method.

A tip.

Recently heard from a vac shop owner. Submerge parts cleaned with mothers in very hot water with dawn dish soap, he told me this would remove most if not all of the black residue left by the polish.

there are 3 (yes) Kirby vacuums in my basement. WHY??? No idea. I'll see how nice I can make them look. Perhaps I'll bring them to the VCCC Convention and try to sell them. I'm sure some folks would like to have them, even if they spent some time here.in the morgue. Gloves out...... ready....polish! One must protect one's hands form chemicals, etc.

letting the Mother's dry...

Works wonderfully. I am, however, heading to Harbor Freight Tools in the morning to price bench polishers. Should make quick work of the polishing. I still have to polish my Sanitronic 80. I am getting a second set of attachments for my Sanitronic Friday.

Almost ready.....

Picked up the bench polisher, now I just have to mount it to the work bench.

Can't wait to see those Kirby's SHINE!
