As some of you know, I have a great appreciation for 70's Eureka Products, Also that my two dream machines were part of Eureka's illusive Top of The Line machines. This year, those dreams became a reality. I am now the esteemed owner of two rare Eureka TOL beauties! I will let the pictures that follow do the talking.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Did you steal that orange shag rug from the set of "Match Game '76" ?!

I have a similar Eureka, a two-speed Rugulator-Vibra-Groomer upright, on which I conducted a "Dr. Moreau" vivisection treatment: I grafted a cord winder and handle from an older model onto it.  (I just noticed from your photos that the cord reel is from the model you have!)

I had had the handle and cord winder for quite a while. Then when I found the oh-so-shiny ultra-deluxe Eureka, the cord winder seemed a natural for it! It took a good bit of work -- I had to drill a new set of holes into the handle to fit into the handle connector on the motor unit because the holes didn't line up.

It's one of my favorite "newer" uprights and it really cleans up a storm. I love the vibrating sound it makes on the rugs.

Very nice!

I have that one pictured in the first few pictures! I don't have the cord thing though. The cord comes out of the handle. The bag has also been replaced and at the moment it has no motor in it. Old one died.

Jae,

is that a Zenith Allegro console stereo, about circa 1977?

Ahhh yes. "Eureka. The very best in vacuum cleaners." :-)

We need to get you a crevice tool for your Tool Pak! It's too bad Eureka stopped selling those nifty plastic tool caddies that came out in the 1960's...:-(.

The CordAway installed on that chrome Eureka Continental is actually from an even older, more classic, Eureka upright! It's from the original Vanguard upright from the very early 1970's. I think it was Model 2070 if I am not mistaken. The golden Rugulator Cordaway shown in the first group of pics here is Model 2083 from 1974.

Great Eurekas &

Hoovers & carpet & quilt & big CDs(as my nephew calls them) & more!
By coincidence I will have a nice more standard brown version(no cordwinder, etc.)with rounded hood in my next EBay vacs.I also have as many as SIX of the super deluxe in pic 5 above for parts or to restore.(Almost)FINAL WARNING on my deluxe gold Eurekas--The space they take up is now of more value to me than the Eurekas. When I start selling and scrapping(SOON!)they will be among the first to GO! If anyone has any interest in them let me know.
Now back to your Eurekas and Hoovers.I feel that they were neck and neck in cleaning ability most of the time. But from decade to decade it might change as to who was Number 1.What is your experience?

Although not my genre (make, etc), I DO appreciate them and THOSE who collect them.
That look SCREAMS 70s. As does the carpets and other furnishings. I remember the 70s very well.

Thank you all...

For the compliments on not only my Eureka's, but my decor too. I had pieced my home together from scratch.

@Vacerator: That is a Top of Zenith Allegro console. But mine is a 1973 Allegro from the introduction of the Allegro system. That was a $500.00 Stereo in 1973. I also have two correct Allegro remote speakers on the other side of the room for the four channel 2+2 Matrix sound. I am including pages from a 1973 Zenith brocure I scanned, these pages are for my model.

@:Rugsucker:My opinion on Eureka and Hoovers competition in the 70's. They were neck in neck in some ways, but in some others they weren't. As far as uprights go, Eureka had Hoover beat in the TOL feature package. Hoover stuck to their guns as far as cleaning went, and yes has experimented with the cord reel on the Convertible for the simple fact to compete with Eureka, we all know that the market is all about competition, and who can out do or copy who. But no other upright had the flashy features like Eureka, meaning the Powertouch, Cordaway, boxtop bag, Rugualtor, two speeds, and headlight all on ONE machine. That I am certain was looked at as impressive by business owners and costumers alike. But like I said, Hoover had TOL features too, but they seemed to be less impressed by flashy gadgets on their machines, and knew that if you took away the boxtop, and the cord reel, and the power touch etc, you ended up with a upright that is the same machine a little down the tier of models. So thus they seemed to more boast on their sheer ability to clean and clean well. I have respect for Hoover for that. As a collector, I like flashy features and cool gadgets, but the truth of it is, for the average homemaker of 1976,cleaning ability is what counts in the end. But as far as Hoover and Eureka canisters go, I think they WERE neck in NECK! When Eureka introduced the Empress and the Empress II there was not another canister like it, with a high amperage, and push button suction control, and a cord reel and tool rack again all on the SAME machine, unheard of, but yet this is all on a canister, which a flashy canister seems to be far more needed at this time then a flashy upright. Then Hoover introduced the Celebrity, with that they really matched Eureka feature for feature. Then when Eureka added the power head in 1972, hoover added the Powermatic to the Celebrity in 1976. By the end of the 70's you could get a canister with 12amps total, that has a electric hose and Powerhead, that both pulled almost 100 on the suction tester, both has push button suction controls, both had headlights in the PN, both had bag check indicators, both had cord reels, both had tool racks in the top of the machines, and both had a name that insinuated one was the best, both even had the Roman numeral II after the name. That says it all.

I really think Eureka uprights were better cleaners from 1960 to whenever Hoover finally switched over to a big top-fill bag. Hoover's bottom fill bags could easily restrict air flow and weaken the cleaning performance. Once they went to top-fill, the new Hoovers cleaned a lot better and were a good match for Eurekas.
