My high school ceramics teacher is looking for a vacuum cleaner that won't blow the dust back into ther air, will be able to take the abuse of the clay dust, and will not clog up instantly either.

Since I will be looking it can be new or vintage for that matter.

Any ideas?

Hey try a Kenmore Progressive, I own several of the original ones made in late 90s and early 2000s They are very nice and have good filtration. I have alergys ( Not severe ) and these are great. Let us know whnat you pick up

School Vac

If the budget and size, arrangement and type of construction of art room allows how about a central mounted outside or commercial styles as used for fine dust from woodworking?

It has to be a portable...

Here is the situation, The unionized night janitor is known to sleep on the job and fails to even vacuum the regular classrooms weekly and almost never even enters the ceramics studio. With the union they can't fire him. This has to be something that my pottery teacher can use herself and doesn't need installation. It is all tile floor so a canister would be preferable. The Kenmore sounds good but with the relatively small bag I think that the fine dust might clog the pores quickly.

Well, how about either a Rainbow or a Filter Queen? They both have great filteration, but of course the Rainbow requires more TLC. Toby G.

We use a specific hepa backpack for our ceramics room. As far as i can tell the only real difference is it has a hepa dome filter before the motor. I'm also thinking maybe a shop vac with a cleanstream filter might work? i've heard they are a lot easier to clean.

NSS M1 Pig???

Would the pig be a good choice in your opinion?

Will it

mainly be used to vacuum the floor, or does each work station need a vacuum?
If so, a woodcrafters belt driven dust collector may be best.
I don't know. I guess I'd go with the Pig.

vacuum suggestions

Since you are vacuuming all tile floors, you don't need a vacuum with a spinning brush. I would suggest a backpack or canister. For backpacks, check out the proteam super coach, Perfect pb1001 or the Sandia Raven models. If you want to go the canister route, I would suggest a Riccar Prima, Miele C1 olympus, Sebo airbelt D1, or Electrolux ultra one classic.

Go with the NSS PIG-think this would be too rough place for home type vacuums. If desired you can use the Shop Vac 12Gal Filtrete bags in the Pig with a little modification to the bag inlet-just sand it a little to fit the Pigs bag horn.Otherwise you can use the NSS paper bags. And the Pig could pick up damp peices of clay without worry.
