In another thread I read that the Canadian Electrolux serials could be uncoded; that is, the first digit indicated the last digit of the production year. I also saw a webpage about how some other appliance companies coded their serials (see link below).

That got me thinking that Electrolux Corporation in the USA (now Aerus LLC) likely used a code to identify its production months and years--along with other data. I used to think that the digits were the units' production #s, but now I'm not so sure (I have yet to see any Electrolux serial # like 69,999 or 77,000).

The other digits may have been coded for such data as the factory, distribution region, or style of cleaner (e.g. cylinder, upright, polisher, handheld ...).

I just grabbed a few serials I found online to produce my theory. Check out the list below and see if your Electrolux serials work with the code, and let us know if they do. If not, do you see other possibilities?

Interesting but the serial numbers on my 1205 (Y12112M) and Super J (K33094S) don't fit those patterns unless my Super J were manufactured in March of 1930 and my 1205 were manufactured in month zero of 1939.

Bubble Burst

Guess I got over-zealous--at least with the older cleaners.

As far as I can tell the ones since 1985 (when the American & Canadian companies merged) have the first digit/last year digit code.

compactc9guy, following that code your AP200 was manufactured in 1979.

So maybe the letters are coded something like the GE/USA ones?

Does anyone have a serial code list for Aerus/Electrolux cleaners? I looked online but couldn't find one.

I would think that Aerus would have published one for consumers like many other companies have done, including Kirby.

BikerRay? Tig21er? Anyone?

Hmmm interesting Antoine:

Since the 280 was already in production in 1978 that would mean they also produced some 200's at the same time.

Doug,

Could it be that the 280s weren't sold until 1979, but maybe production began in 1978? Until John A. corrected the Olympia One's beginning to April 1979, it was erroneously said to have debuted in 1978--even on the Aerus chart.

Hint: Is there a 1978 manual for it?

Electrolux Corporation's Production Specifics

Does anyone know ...

1) Did each 2-letter series begin at 00001 and end at 99,999?

2) The approximate monthly or yearly production output?

3) The estimated total production numbers of the Models XXX, LX, G, Super J, et cetera?

These could help to determine ballpark years of manufacture. At one time I made a pretty lengthy list of the Model XXX 2-letter series and was able to pair some with production periods.

Yeah, I'm kind of envious of Canadian & European Electrolux collectors who can use their countries' coded serial numbers to identify them.

The serial number of my early LX with the yellow and red side panels is X04792K. So I wonder if the last three digits,792,represents the date of manufacture? 7/9/52? It would also be nice to find out what the two letters stand for.

Could be that time frame.

The first letter (prefix) of a series was used with a half dozen or so second letters (suffixes). These seem to have been selected randomly but were typically the same throughout a model's run (except in the case of the Model XXX that was produced in much greater quantity). The series suffix, however, did change - as far as I can tell in alphabetical order (though not always beginning with 'A'). My question is the frequency- every 99,999 or less?

Btw, since Aerus continues to use the 85-year (or more) serial number composition - likely beginning with the first Electrolux USA Model XXX - it stands to reason that in time s/ns are reused.
