Hi all,
I have planned to own a vacuum cleaner for my house and would like to get one that would be durable for a certain period which is why I would like ideas on which one to go with rather than simply choosing a random one. I have gone through the canister and upright vacuums being provided by a professional in Canada

I've done house cleaning for many years.

Many households with wall to wall to carpets tend to go with an upright.

I recommend a canister with power nozzle for any household. They are versatile machines capable of thoroughly cleaning every square inch of your home or business. The low profile electric power nozzle as you know can easily get under beds and furniture. The bare floor brush whether included with machine or you add a decent generic from a vacuum store for about $12 will thorougly and carefully remove all dust and dirt from your hard floors without possible marring wheels, or rotating brush rolls. The separate suction unit makes cleaning of stairs, automobile or around the garage and attic a breeze.

My experience of 20 years of household and commercial environment cleaning of just about every vacuum brand you can think of, my recommendation is a Riccar or Simplicity Vacuum. Both are made by Tacony a USA based manufacturer. They have various high quality models to suit your needs for cleaning and surfaces. Very durable machines that can take abuse, clean excellently and last you years while providing a clean environment for you and your family. Their canister vacuums are extremely powerful, yet quiet and offer HEPA filtration. User friendly designs. The new Wonder/ Prima line is a way to basically tailor to your needs.

If Hoover was the quality that they were years ago, or you find an older Hoover they are great cleaners. The current market WindtunnelMax or T-series bagged upright is a good cleaner. As far as durability that's a question for a repair shop.

Pricing would only be available from an authorized dealer near you as you can't get them online. The websites mention MSRP which is way out of proportion of any vacuum shop I've looked at, especially if you possibly have an older vacuum to trade in towards the purchase of a new unit!

If it turns out that Riccar/ Simplicity machines are out of your budget. I would look to Panasonic. Their bagged machines are very good!! They have a new plush pro power nozzle system that easily cleans a newer softer textured carpet.

Panasonic, Riccar and Simplicity have great uprights too if that's your niche and it works well with the surfaces in your home!

Here are some tips for your search:

--- Try before you buy. Even if a dealer has to special order the actual model you decide on, if you can at least try a similar unit by that manufacturer with hopefully same styled power nozzle and hose handle design it will give you an idea for general user comfort and contol.

--- Bagged beats bagless!! Bagless designs can look cool and can save if you have lots of pet hair. But they lose performance quick, due to limited capacity they need maintenance every time you run the machine!! A mess to empty!! A bagged machine will handle fine dust and dirt tremendously better and maintain power of the machine longer. Bagged machines will also stuff and compact dirt like a brick into the bag. A dirt cup bagless unit by this point would be picking up a bare minimum off your surfaces.

--- Listen to recommendations by your local vacuum store and the surfaces you have in your home.

--- Most machines on the market today clean surface dirt well and handle pet hair with ease. The main question is durability, deep cleaning ability, how long that power lasts, filtration and ease of use.

--- You'll receive many recommendations for Kirby on this site I'm sure and may see some for resale in your vacuum shop!! They are a quality, well built machine. But they are heavy, loud in attachment use and require more effort and patience to reset carpet height every time you run the cleaner, getting it room to room and the attachment storage. Plusses are that the machine will last many many years and include tons of attachments. Many Kirby owners are "WOWED" by the machine in the product demo and then months or a year later try finding a lighter weight easier to use cleaner. Try this before buying it!!!!

--- Avoid the hype!!! Dysons are heavy advertisement based and have good airflow to start. But there are many carpet manufacturers that will void your warranty if owning a Dyson. Their agitation is not all that and agitation is a major factory in carpet cleaning. Oreck is another that is heavy on advertising. However their machine bodies are fairly cheaply built, suction motors aren't very powerful which impedes overall carpet cleaning. They can fool you because the semi- decent brush roll can do a good job on surface dirt, but deep cleaning is not good on an Oreck.

-- Don't look at Amps. It is just a measure of how much electricity the machine consumes. Factors that relate to cleaning are unfortunately primarily hidden from customer view but a vacuum store would know such as: fan size, single or dual stage motor, water lift, agitation-- RPM's of the brush roll along with design for how it channels dirt to the air duct.

-- Serpentine or cogged belt designs are better than typical stretch belt.

-- Aerus is another brand that is very good. Aerus brand is the former Electrolux that your mom have had growing up. Aerus would have it's own dealership or you may find some refurbs available at a vacuum shop. Depending on the age the machine may be labeled Aerus or Electrolux. Just know for canisters-- long and slender body like a torpedo is Aerus. Small and box like is the new Electrolux. Their canister/ tank designs kind of look like a torpedo. The current Electrolux brand does clean well but bags are small and they can be known for repairs.

HI Emma, welcome to Vacuumland. More information would be great from you, Emma such as:

Size of home and type of home, such as if it is a flat or a house.
Whether it has carpets or a mix of more carpets or more hard floors.
Whether YOU prefer an upright or a canister/cylinder.
Noise considerations - do you have a large family, small family, pets?
Lack of space an issue for storage?

Yes, more information would be helpful, but I also agree about going with a canister. With a power nozzle, a canister will clean as good as an upright, if not better, and they are much more flexible for above the floor cleaning. I would also suggest a bagged vacuum over bagless. This is personal preference of course, and this debate will probably continue as long as vacuums exist, but bagged vacuums are much easier to deal with when emptying, just toss the bag, much less exposure to everything that has been vacuumed up.

Welcome to Vacuumland Emma!

Indeed...we armchair advisers need more information. Primarily, how much carpet do you have to clean and is it wall-to-wall broadloom, or just area rugs here and there? How deep is the carpet pile? What percentage of your flooring is covered by carpet? Is your home on one level only, or multi-storey? Do you like cleaning your bare floors with a vacuum or not? Do you have pets and if yes, what kind?

And most importantly: what is the maximum price you are willing to pay?

I agree with Durango 159 that you should consider Aerus, the current name for the original Electrolux USA brand.

You mentioned "durable for a certain period," which is why I suggest Aerus. A few years ago, the top-tier Aerus machine (Guardian Ultra) came with an unprecedented 20-year warranty. The Lux Legacy and Lux Classic are lower-tier models of the same machine and share the majority of their internals. Even though their warranties are 10 and 5 years respectively, they theoretically should be able to hit the 20-year mark without a problem. Further proof of the brand's reliability is how many of their products are still going. I have a small collection of vintage-ish Electrolux machines, and they all still have original motors, power nozzles, etc. If durability is your concern, buy an Aerus product and use it for 20+ years.

The Guardian Platinum is the only Aerus product that I can't personally vouch for. It is an all-new machine with some electronic wizardry inside that was never in any previous Aerus product. These machines have a 15-year warranty, so they should be good to go for a very long time, but their electronics haven't stood the test of time yet like Aerus's other products. Some of the early machines had growing pains, but they've been mostly reliable.

(Again, just to solidify the fact, Electrolux USA sold its right to the Electrolux name back to Electrolux of Sweden in like 2001-ish. Since that time, original Electrolux USA products have all been called Aerus and are still sold through dealerships only; the Electrolux products sold in Wal-Mart stores are all unrelated products from Sweden aka China).

Aerus LLC, formerly Electrolux Corp. USA, manufactures vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners and air purifiers. Aerus is the successor to Electrolux USA.

In 1968, Consolidated Foods Corporation (now known as Sara Lee Corporation) acquired Electrolux.

In 2000, the North American rights to the Electrolux brand name were sold to Electrolux Group of Sweden, which was previously unaffiliated since 1968. The corporation that originally manufactured Electrolux vacuums has been known as Aerus since 2001.

Emma hasn't responded since she made that original plea, though.
