Here are my three: A late 1930's Eureka model M, a fully restored 1949 Kirby 509, and a Royal 215. The Eureka and Royal are in thier beautiful original condition except for cleaning and polishing.

The oldest,

is in fact just that, the oldest. The first known vacuum cleaner, dating back to 1869, it's the Whirlwind.

The vacuum cleaner that started my interest when I was two years old, the Electrolux model LX of 1952. (I was born in September of 1950.)

Mike,

Obviously, it's my 1977 Kirby Classic III that is my perennial favorite.

Isn't my oldest (that award goes to my Hoover 541). My most cherished is a 1980 Electrolux Olympia One that my mother purchased the year I was born. She gave it to me when she got a new machine. I refurbished it and I have it stored safe away from the rest of my collection. It still runs great!

When it was new, it didn't originally come with a pn, but the port is electrified

and now it has an original electric hose, and a pn.

My oldest is a beautifully redone Hoover 102 (thanks Marty Kaplan) and my most cherished is way to hard to answer. I'd have to say my entire Hoover Convertible collection of 65 plus different models.

Hi Icee:

caligula's profile picture
I assume you mean the Whirlwind. Yes, it's a rare one alright. I've mentioned this one several times hrer at Vacuumland, but it was in fact the very first of what we now know as the vacuum cleaner.

At the risk of repeating myself, the Whirlwind was invented in Chicago in early 1869 with the patent date of June 8, and was the brainchild of Ives W. Mc'Gaffey. It was marketed in Boston by the American Carpet Cleaning company. Unfortunately very few still exist, only 5 are known to be out there. Why are they so rare? Because on October 7, 1871 there was the Great Chicago Fire that burned the city to the ground in three days, and the Whirlwinds being made of light wood, burned like matchsticks. Then in 1872, Boston suffered a major fire, and those Whirlwinds burned, so the only ones left were those sold elsewhere. The one shown came from Claremont, New Hampshire, and I got it in the early 1980's.

These are my favorite vacuum cleaners due to age and historical value, I love the non electric machines of the mid 1800's to the early 1900's.

If you want to know more about these machines contact me privately at Ralextaber@gmail.com. And here are a few more of the 'old pumpers and sweepers.'

This is my oldest vacuum so far. A 1965 Kirby Dual Sanitronic 50 in excellent condition.

It had a factory rebuild in 1989 then was put into storage until I bought it on ebay in 2014.

I had to replace the bag because the factory replacement bag had some dry rot.

That would be my oldest Kirby
My 508
I'm in the process of making it all original
All I need to do is get black and grey vinyl paint and paint the grip and headlight trim grey
and the wheels black. After that I will need an original bag.
I will either ask someone on vacuumland for an original bag, or I will buy a new original looking corduroy bag from chicagomike

My oldest (electric) vacuum is my Royal model 1 from 1910. The cord had an in-line switch, and ran through the handle, plugging into the side of the machine. The cord came back out of the handle, so the handle could be used as the cleaning wand with the hose. Very unique design.

My oldest vacuum is my 1922 Hoover model 105. My 1926 General Electric 69 is close behind in age. My most cherished would still have to be my 1997 Fantom Thunder because it was the first vacuum I ever got for my collection when I was 11 years old (I'm almost 18 now.)

Question for Kirby 508 owners

charleskirby66's profile picture
Does your Kirby 508 have a small spring on the nozzle locking lever? The lever I'm referring to is mounted on the fan case and is used to "lock" the nozzle onto the front of the unit, right before you then use the Belt Lifter to attach the belt to the pulley.

Does your 508 have the spring, which adds tension and helps "lock" the carpet nozzle onto the unit?

Just an FYI for Daniel to begin with - Your Goblin Triumph model 46 was made from 1945-1950.

My oldest machines would be my Goblin Model 40 from the 1920's, My Electrolux Model 11 from 1926 and my Tuec stationary cleaner from 1912.

'48 Lux XXX.
My grandparents bought it new from a salesman. They went 50/50 on the payments with my great grandparents and shuttled it between them every other week.
I have it now.

Lewyt for collectors

Nice thread. My favorite is an Electrolux G model- I still use it but am having a hard time getting parts. I have a newer 'lux, but also have my grandmother's Lewyt, and I'd like to get it on to a new home/collector. Please respond if you could use a Lewyt or know a starting collector who could use it. Sorry, not attachments or box. Andrea Morris
