I recently got a turquoise PN-1 from another 1205 at an estate sale for $5. That inspired me to unpack this 1205 that I've had for several years. With the power nozzle, I finally have a complete 1205 set, and I've been using it almost every day. I originally got the machine at Goodwill for, I believe, $15, with both the original, and a brand new hose! I use the new one, as I don't want to tear up the old woven hose. The new one doesn't leak, either. The cord winder on this is very smooth and swift, but it sometimes has issues locking. It sometimes takes me several minutes to get the cord to lock so I can use it, but that's not too big of a problem. I got some Novus plastic polish at an estate sale recently, and I removed about 20% of the scratches on the power nozzle. It's not perfect, but it's much better looking than it was before. For the VCCC members, you will probably see this machine in Chicago.

Nice machine. I've had my 1205 for about 12 years and I love it. I switch off between it and my Super J when I'm not in the mood for heavy duty Kirby cleaning. Of course, truth be told, I'm usually not in the mood for cleaning at all.

The 1205 is a lovely machine although I have some personal negative connotations to that model. I'll tell my story of a pervy Electrolux salesman if anyone's interested.

I have had a few of them come and go over the years. Arlee has one that his father purchased new when they lived in Palm Springs -- straight-suction setup only since their home had no carpeting. Here's a photo of him using it.

I WAS AN ELECTROLUX SALESMAN
A Sordid Tell-All

Well, actually my stint with Electrolux was very very short-lived. One day, to be exact.

I had shyly wandered into the local branch office one day to ask if they might have any old models or parts for them. I was 18 at the time but looked about 12 -- I always looked much younger than my age. The branch manager "took a liking" to me and offered me a job working as his sales assistant. Boy, was I thrilled! I was to start working the very next day. He showed me the machines (1205, L, CB, B-8), including photos and brochures of the Golden Jubilee which would be out very soon. (It was in fact already in production but the branch stores hadn't actually gotten the machines yet.)

I was so excited I could hardly sleep that night ... Got there the next morning, was the first one there -- had to wait for others to show up to let me in!

I spent the day tagging along with him, watching him at work. It was a fairly uneventful day; he only sold one pack of bags to a nice lady. At the end of the day he offered to take me out to dinner. He took me to a very nice restaurant where he had several cocktails with his dinner. Afterward, we went back to the Electrolux shop and everyone had left, so we were the only ones there. He took me back to the sales "war room" where there was a projector for showing sales films.

He said, "Let's watch some movies." I thought he meant sales movies. He did not. He meant "stag" movies. An old, like, 1950s black and white "girlie" movie came onto the screen. He stood very close to me and said, "Do you like to see naked ladies?" He suddenly became a vile, drunk old man, with boozy breath, very bad B.O., and was giving me these drooly, cross-eyed leers. I really started to get nervous, and reeeally freaked out when he, well, groped me. I ran out of the place, drove home, and never came back. He called a few times but when I realized who was calling, I hung up on him.

That experience haunted me for a long time, so much so that I actually had a "phobia" about the 1205 and couldn't even stand to look at one. I was very naive at the time and had never had anything happen like that -- let alone with some drooling, drunk, stinky old man.  It was not until many years later ,when I met a collector who's just nuts for the 1205, that I started to get over this experience thanks to my new friend's undying enthusiasm for the machine. I actually have a 1205, in beautiful condition, that my former pastor's wife gave me.

Now, I can kinda laugh about that experience, since I have gotten over it, and really laugh at what a naive kid I was at that time.  I shouldda known what he was up to the very minute I saw the leering gleam in his eye when I first came into the store.

But, then, sometimes I still can feel that awful knot in the pit of my stomach when I realized what that disgusting old man was up to that cold winter night in 1974...

(P.S.: An amusing footnote: One day when Stan Kann was visiting, Arlee told him and me that his father had bought an Electrolux from a door-to-door salesman in the 1970s when they lived in Palm Springs. He said his cousin, who lived in their old house, still had it. One day when we went out there for a weekend we went to the house and he got the Electrolux -- a 1205 in nearly perfect condition.)

Was there "call trace" or "selective # block" available at that time?

Call block (Enter up to x amount of #s so they can't get thru a call)

a beautiful 1205 with chrome power-head stole my heart in the early 70s. Neighbor to ours with fancy everything had one and she let me use it. I had never heard of a power-head canister before! Wow could it dig stuff out and fluff the carpet. I borrowed that thing all the time. So was always looking for one like it, ONE day. Silverado came along 20+ years ago in good shape and 60 dollars in a pawn shop. Needed a new hose and a breaker replaced. That was it. Nothing broken since. So I relive that when I use the machine of course.Love that blue though!

Re call trace

IN 1974!!! Have mercy NO, here in NC you still dialed 0 for the operator and told her the number for a long distance call!!!!!

Post# 342240 , Reply# 12   1/28/2016 at 19:48 (3,007 days old) by floor-a-matic (somewhere)

I've only been around since January 1982; but I don't know if call trace came out the same yr I was born (at least in OH) or later in the '80s?

As for the Electrolux, my parents bought the 1205, B8 shampooer & Model L in 1970

The 1205 came with PN1 powerhead & Rug Washer

When they bought the Model L, they only got the two combo tools, non-electric hose, hose cord & automatic cord winder, but no crevice tool or PN.  Later they got the PN2 & the extra long hose in turquoise

From that point on, they got numerous Electroluxes from the XXX thru the Thrift Model & a Super J

I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on some bags I found. I've heard some bad things about Aerus Home Solutions bags in the past, so I wanted something better. Then I found these Perfect HEPA bags for Electroluxes. I'm thinking of getting some.

1205 Versions

Besides the hose and power nozzle variations the 1205's body also underwent changes during its 7-year run:

1968-c. 1970 - smooth teal-colored metal, teal bag chamber cover (pigtail port below hose inlet on first version only), black control panel, bumper logo graphic in red, serial on cord winder (on first version only; first character "Y")

c. 1970 - c. 1972 - smooth teal-colored metal, navy bag chamber cover, navy control panel, bumper logo graphic in red, serial on stabilizer (first character "Z")

c. 1972 - 1974 - textured teal-colored metal, dark green bag chamber cover, dark green control panel, bumper logo graphic in red, serial on stabilizer (first character "Z")

1974-1975 - 50th Jubilee edition--with decal (nicknamed "Golden Jubilee"), textured gold-colored metal , redesigned bag chamber cover and control panel in golden yellow, redesigned handle and top, redesigned exhaust port cover, bumper logo graphic in gold, serial on stabilizer (first character "Z")

In addition different motors were used beginning with the same one as the tan Model G (1968), one designed for the 1205 (c. 1969- c. 1970), and a corrective redesign c. 1970-1975).

Also, someone once mentioned in another thread that the exhaust covers in the teal versions varied slightly according to the red graphics and text, but I wonder if that was just due to wear?

I learned a powerful lesson in Electrolux-ology today. I was doing a whole house vacuum today, and (after topping off the old bag), I continued on into the bedrooms, where I accidentally sucked up a shoelace and subsequently snapped the belt. On modern power nozzles (like my Hyla), if something gets snagged on the brushroll, the circuit breaker will pop and protect the belt. Well, I guess that's not the case on the PN-1. If somebody could give me some more information on installing that feature on this nozzle, I'd appreciate it. I don't want to be snapping belts once a month.

PN-1 Help!

universaldave1's profile picture
I bought a brand new belt and brushroll for the Electrolux PN-1 and now it's acting strange. The motor sounds like it's laboring and it occasionally makes these terrible grinding sounds. The brushroll is identical to the old one, and the belt seems to fit fine. I'm pretty sure I put it back together correctly. The new brushroll is identical to the old one, only not worn out. If you need a video, I'll be happy to put one up.

Your problem is that brushroll is for a Pn2! It will drag it down. Order a pn1 brushroll and it should work. the metal 'disks' (or thread cutters) signify that is the wrong brushroll

One thing I've always wondered about Electroluxes is what is the purpose of the cleaning selector? I know it has something to do with how long it takes before the vacuum thinks the bag is full. Also, how will these new Perfect HEPA bags work with it?

Yes, its for the nag sensor, no it wont work with hepa. They hold the suction forever and they can get full without the vacuum sensing it

I got this brand new genuine Electrolux EH-4 when I got the 1205 along with the original hose. But I can't find another one anywhere! All I can find are the generic aftermarket ones. If I wanted to get another one of these, where do I look?

Perstistent PN-1 problems

universaldave1's profile picture
I took off the thread cutters on the new PN-2 brushroll that I put in, but the belt smell and noises are still there. I took a video of it so we can more easily find the problem. The only thing I can think of to do now is take my pocketknife and cut off the bristles that hit the rug guard.

with the belt off, you should be able to spin the brushroll by hand to see what is going on.

Maybe a piece of metal needs to be tweaked.

Get the right brush roll

human's profile picture
My PN-1 had a PN-2 brush roll in it before I replaced it with a proper PN-1 brush roll last spring. If I recall correctly, the PN-2 brush roll was ever so slightly longer and thus fit more snugly in the PN-1 and has no side-to-side play. The PN-1 brush roll has a bit of side-to-side play in it but performs a helluva lot better.

Go ahead and get the right brush roll. You and your power nozzle will be happier in the long run. Besides, they aren't terribly expensive--and a whole lot less expensive than replacing the motor. Here's one on eBay for $16.99 with free shipping:

I'm still learning my Electroluxes. I want to get more of them. In the past, I have passed up several really good deals on Electroluxes, and I regret not getting them. But now, I buy every Electrolux I see. I currently have a XXX, an E, a Turquoise G, a Tan G, two 1205's, a Super J, and a Diamond Jubilee. This 1205 and the XXX is the only complete ones, but I'll look and I might be able to cobble a set of attachments for the J and Diamond Jubilee. I still need to get a new cord and hose for the XXX, though.

Super J

universaldave1's profile picture
I got this machine at a flea mall many years ago and decided that it was time to clean it up and enjoy it. So today, I liberated it, gave it a good clean up, and put it to work. The PN-4 worked flawlessly on our shag carpet. I used to have all the attachements, but unfortunately, they were lost in a move 4 years ago. I'd like to get a set of attachments for this lovely machine again someday. I used my new genuine Electrolux EH-4 instead of the original chevron brown woven EH-4 which I do still have. The suction on this machine is absolutely incredible. With a HEPA bag installed and a new non leaky hose, this thing is unstoppable.

One minor problem with the Super J is that when I bought it, the carry handle had come loose and was taped onto the machine. The same day, I took it to the (now defunct) vacuum store, and the nice man there fixed it for me at no charge. But now, his quick repair is starting to crumble. The more I use this machine, I see more hairline cracks in the plastic. If (when) it breaks, perhaps I'll just super glue it or something.

I have seen many SuperJ top pieces with the handle on ebay.

Since it is easy to remove (and relatively light), it is one of the more common parts from the SuperJ available.

Even one that is rusted would be a candidate, you just need the handle.

The top cover is made of different pieces that screw together.

Electrolux Diamond Jubilee

universaldave1's profile picture
I was at an estate sale a few weeks ago, and I scored a Bronze Model G and a Diamond Jubilee with attachments all for $15. I just got through cleaning the Diamond Jubilee, which wasn't all that much fun considering how absolutely filthy it was. I have the PN-5, but it is too far gone. The motor is locked up and the plastic is cracked everywhere. I think I have a spare in the storage unit. I may consider selling this machine. Anyone know a good price for one of these complete?
