Good news! As I sat on my workbench looking at the Kirby Heritage II brushes I had ordered for my Hoover model 700, I hatched an idea. I shaved away at them with my hobby knife and some sandpaper, using the old (somewhat good) brush as a reference guide. The spring that came with the Kirby brushes was much too wide and long so I carefully removed the old springs off the old brushes and placed them in the new ones. I had to shave a little where the spring sits but after a minute or two of sanding, it fit in place.
I checked to be sure that the brush didn't bind inside in the brush holder, spun them in, gave it a go and the ol' 700 sounds much healthier now! I hope you die hard Hoover fans can forgive me for using Kirby parts in a Hoover, but you have to keep in mind, they don't make parts for these anymore. The only option is to get creative with what's available on hand. I also know these new ones look "chippy" but after that initial shot I took some time to reshape them properly. One other thing I should mention these WILL arc like crazy at first, but after you run/wear them in for a while the brushes will take shape and the arcing will cease after a few uses of the machine. Hope this helps someone out there, just figured I'd share this tip with you all. Below I have the old brushes and in the next picture is the new homemade ones. (Still find it odd how one of the old brushes got shaped like that, I've never seen anything like it.) |
