Hello guys. I haven't been on for a few months but I came on to say that I got another vacuum. I recently brought a vacuum from Alex Tipton, who was selling the vac for $100. And I am sure excited. *Drum roll please* The vacuum that I am getting is.....A Kenmore Drytech!..... Yes you heard it. I finally got my hands on one. And in good condition too. The only thing wrong (which I'm not too bothered about) is that there are some paint scratches on the plastic bin. But Im sure that can come off easily. Anyways I'll update you guys and post some photos of the vacuum when it comes in. ;D

The Dry Tech is the only dual cyclonic upright that I've ever heard of - where the dirty air is BLOWN into the bin and PUSHED through the cyclones. Since it uses a dirty air motor, there is NO pre-motor filter. Also, there is no post motor filter on the Dry Tech, since the airflow through both cyclones never changes in volume or velocity. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing to have an 8 pound dirty air upright (like a Simplicity Freedom or an Awfulwreck) with a dual cyclonic design?

"direct air" is also known as "dirty air". It means the dirt passes through the blades of a fan (like in a Kirby). "Clean air" means the air is cleaned by something (bag, filter, cyclone) before the air enters the fan.
The only 'dirty air' cyclonic vac that I know of is the Dry Tech. When it was first marketed, the Dry Tech's instructions stated you could use it as a household vacuum, but warned you to clean the brush roll often. |

On the Drytech machines I have there is a decal on them telling you NOT to use it as a general vacuum cleaner.Maybe there was problems of dust leakage or poor filtering? |

CB123, it's amazing how many machines on the market let dust through. In my mind Dyson isn't half as bad as some bagless Eurekas and Bissells. One thing for Dyson it is good at spinning a lot of the dust out of the air in the cyclones before it reaches the filters. Over time, Dyson filters do need cleaning like any other vacuum but they last tremendously longer timewise compared to most any other bagless system vacuum cleaner!!
Unless you buy a Riccar, Rainbow, Miele, or Sebo, possible Aerus and a couple other brands, the vacuum cleaner you have is most likely not a sealed system and there are places all over where air leaks out that has not passed through the final filter. I have not had good experience with cleaning performance of Sebo. However, their filtration is Top Notch!! I will vouch that I don't believe Dysonman1's 1st comment was meant to be an insult. There are numerous appearances in the archives of this site and general in the vacuum world where you'll see reference of a Dirty Air machine to mean a Direct Air. That expression came about more common as manufacturers termed the Bypass design as the Clean Air Design machine. The Clean Air Bypass design, the air goes through the bag or dirt cup and then premotor filter which in comes is a HEPA prior to going through fan in motor. Such is the case for any canister vacuum or in examples of uprights: Eureka Victory, Hoover Windtunnel, Riccar Vibrance. Dirty Air machines the dirt goes to the fan in the floor head prior to go to the bag. After the bag the air is exhausted out the machines, and sometimes without another filter. Examples: Hoover Convertible, Hoover Elite, Eureka Bravo, Kirby's, classic Royals, all consumer Orecks. Dysonman1, like myself is not a fan of Oreck, hence the "Awfulreck." Their performance on anything more than a commercial flat carpet and even on that tends to be nothing special to write home about. The plastic contraptions inside the cloth bag that hold the paper bag on have issues with staying locked well. I've used about 15 Oreck uprights of various models including several dual speed XL Ultras, a few XL21's, Oreck commercial Dual Stack and others. I've had allergy spasms within five minutes of the machines first turning on from EVERY SINGLE ONE!!! I have not had that problem with any other vacuum I've ever used and that's a very long list including several models of various generations of Hoover, Eureka, Kirby, Panasonic, Sanitaire, Electrolux, Windsor, Sebo, Riccar, Nutone Central Vac, Bissell, Filter Queen, Rainbow, Kenmore and more. I've cleaned houses for 20 years as a side job, worked in restaurants for 13 years and more! I've used Many many many models of vacuum cleaners in my personal and career life!! On the other hand the Oreck Dutchtech 1200 canister with Wessel Werk EBK340 power head was very well engineered! I also like the red Oreck Quest Pro power head canister. |

Great thread. Yes "dirty air" is a common term not necessarily an insult. Also given Dysonman1 runs a vacuum museum, it was no surprise he sounded enthusiastic about this machine being a one of a kind design. Why doesn't he call himself Taconyman1 I wonder? Many Orecks are very happy vacuums imo. Some crazy out there designs like the aforementioned Dual Stack, or practical re-badges like their Sanitaire-a-like machines. Oreck made I think on of the first bag docking systems to cut down on dust leakage and BIG high quality hepa bags for their light weight machines. Big is important as it allows for better breathing. The pinch of salt with their vacs, like all others, is at what price? The full freight MSRP was insane, on par with DTD vacs imo. Nowadays I dunno, haven't looked since the buyout by Hoover et al. The 8lb vacs and the XL21 variation are often pretty worn out as second hand vacs BECAUSE they are used a lot by their owners. They also can be rebuilt easily back to full service. |
